Storage question...

Hey Gentlemen (and ladies??),

For the sake of knowing, I have been using Ballistol exclusively for coating my blades before storage. Also, I make it a rule not to store inside my leather sheaths because of the leathers potential to trap moisture (moisture + carbon steel =). I don't worry about my regular users, but the blades that don't see as much regular use...anyway, I digress...

...have any of you used Ren Wax to coat your steel before storing? Will it provide a safe moisture barrier that will allow me to store in leather??

What say you, Beckerheads?

I personally have not used it, but I know a fella who swears by the stuff. Only consideration is the food prep issue. Clean the blade well before using it on your food. I would wash any blade before use, even mineral oil. It's food grade and does not go rancid, but will hold bacteria just the same. :D Hey, mike just noticed you are in Denver. Im in littleton near Kipling and Belleview.

i have some 5160 stored in leather for months on end before getting out to see day, I've always only used mineral oil and I have NEVER had a problem, not even with evaporation of the oil..

cheap, effective, no frills way to go...

Hey neighbor, I'm actually a little north of Denver now. Moved the fam out to Brighton. And yeah, I always clean my blades before using them for food prep.

That's why I use Ballistol; it's mineral oil based, non-toxic, and the price is right! I've heard some guys recommend against storing blades inside leather, so it's nice to get some feedback on that...thanks! I've also heard good things about Ren Wax, so I've been thinking of trying something new...

I often coat the inside of my sheaths with mineral oil, and have never had any rust issues. The blade gets oils when you put it in the sheath. Only thing is that the mineral oil will soften the leather a touch, so, you want a tight fit.

that's one of the main reasons i use it exclusively, its a multi purpose. use it on wood handles, bone etc. not the first choice but will do in a pinch..

I use to try different stuff all the time, more products etc. but found for me its just a waste of money.. I found what works for me and doubt I'll ever change it no matter what new products become available..

there's hardly enough exposed edge on a Becker (that is not coated) for me to worry about rust much. some mineral oil, or a Rem Oil wipe maybe if i'm not going to use it for a WHILE, and i'm going to leave it where there might be condensation, but just some work use will knock the rust off.

now, for a user, if i was REALLY worried, i mustard the edge up, get a patina, and call it done.

for permanent archival storage, sure, you can oil, wax, rem oil, whatever. heck, then dip it in paraffin or even cosmoline :>

i heard about some guy, who collected knives, had this amazingly arcane system for storage and preservation... he wrapped the handles, covered the knives in wax, and layers of tape, and mummified them good, then they were just stacked in crates, oil drums, or just layered onto the wall of his barn. when he passed, his kin found all these "shitty knives", and just dumped the lot for nothing at a flea market. people opening the mummies found pristine old example of Marbles, and other DESIRABLE knives :) heh. note to the wise: have a price list of your stuff, for your relatives, in case you're hit by a bus (and hope they are not driving).

Just to clarify, I don't worry too much about my Beckers, as there is only a small portion on edge that isn't coated, and any rust that would appear usually comes off when sharpening. I do however, own a few other carbon steel blades that aren't coated and don't get used nearly as much...

the only Becker I have is a 7 and I stripped the blade to the handle, I'm sure I'll do the same with my 2 that's coming soon.. after I tear up the coating a touch..

I have one of my Izula's stripped and it push cuts better then any other coated ESEE or other brands that I have..
