So I bought a used cabinet. I was just going to use it as is, however, Should I clean up the rust inside the cabinet and paint over it, or does it matter? Could the rust from the cabinet transfer to steel objects that will be stored inside?

There is a small gap in the door, any recommendations for a seal?

I would definitely clean the rust off. If you are going to put anything of value inside, such as tools, knives, guns, anything. The rust on the cabinet may accelerate the corrosion of steel items within. If you can find someone with a sandblaster, have then blaste the rust off, clean with Acetone afterwards, and paint it over with some quality primer, then enamel spray paint, then spray a sealer over it. Sounds like a lot of work and it is some work, but I would not take chances with any of my tools or other belongings.

As far s a seal for the door, you could attach a "door brush" to one of the doors and it will make slight contact with the opposing door. Won't be airtight, but it will block the view. Do you have pictures of the cabinet? I dig refinishing stuff like this, find it very relaxing and fulfilling.

It just has one door. I wanted to seal out dust as well as maybe helping to fireproof it. It is very heavy and moving it at this point is not much of an option. I could sand or steel wool it then maybe spot prime and paint? Any ideas. thanks for the response revdevil, PM sent.

The rust on that is not as bad as I was expecting. Should make for a fun project. That can be removed easily with some sandpaper (starting with 80 grit, then 220, 320, and finally 400). Some primer, Krylon will work very well, and then some tan/desert tan spray paint (semi gloss). Start sanding out the corner with the 80 grit and see how far the damage is.

Make sure you clean the hinges up too, spray with oil to keep the corrosion to a minimum. In this case, use Fluid Film. For corrosion resistance, it is one of the best things around. Work it into the hinges and handles to prevent further rusting.
