I dont know if this is the right forem, and I dont hang her often but I figure go where the knowledge is......

I recently got my grandfathers old barlow from another family member. I had a devil of a time getting the blades to open.

When I did lay eyes on them they were in pretty good shape : good pattena with a "homemade" full grind and no rust.

I discovered that he (or somebody) had stashed a piece of toothpick soaked in oil under the blade. Anybody heard of this? was it a common practice to protect the carbon blades or just his idea?

Thanks

Rodney

The toothpick raised the blade, making it easier to open. This is an old trick.
