hmmmmm....it says "do not store in sheath:...........
that seemed like the best place to keep it........ I wish they included a few examples of where to keep it along with that caveat........ :ox

If the sheath is leather and the blade is Carbon V, you will get a rust problem. Generally, storing a carbon steel blade in a sheath risks corrosion and Carbon V rusts easily and badly. You can reduce the problem by coating the blade with oil or Ren Wax or Tuffglide. A wood storage sheath or even kydex is better.
Having said that, I actually store my old carbon v trailmaster in the leather sheath I had made for it a few years ago, but I check and coat mine regularly and it's discoloured from use anyway.
If you want to keep it looking perfect and store it for extended periods without regular attention, you could get a lined and zippered case which isn't expensive.
Taking them out and caring for them regularly is better. It's a great excuse to play with your knives. ;)

It's a black coated blade......do you think wiping it down weekly & after use with tuffglide will prevent rust?
I'm not worried about it looking as new.....I bought this one to actually use for small chores outside. But I don't want the edge to get damaged from storage.
I went with this over the new laredo bowie they came out with, because I didn't want to buy still *another* knife I would buy and never use.....lol :)

Take the sheath apart, melt in a good coating of SnowSeal inside and out so that the leather will not absorb water (a blow dryer works great, but wipe it off before your wife knows), and restitch it with waxed nylon thread. Then treat your Trailmaster edge with whatever rust preventive you prefer (I use BreakFree with all my carbon steel blades) and don't worry about it. As long as the sheath will not absorb water, you should be OK.
