Storing folders in my collection?

How should I store the folders in my collection? Is it safe to store, say, a plunge lock folder such as a MOD CQD Mark 1 in the open position for a long time, or should it be folded? Also, is it safe to store say, a ZT300 in the open position for a long period of time? ZT300 is a framelock, if I'm not mistaken?

I really don't see what difference it would make except in the case of automatic knives. I store autos with the spring in the 'uncompressed' position, but I don't see much need to worry about manual knives regardless of the lock type.

But what about the ZT300 and its Assisted opening feature? How should I store it? Open or Closed? Wouldn't it be stored the same way as an auto?

That's a good point but I am not sure how this knife's AO mechanism works, But I cary a Kershaw Leek everyday and it is closed 99% of the time so what's the difference? Maybe I am overlooking something here.

well I suppose the manufacturer ships it the way its ment to be stored for a while....afterall, some knives sit in stockrooms and warehouses for a while......so that said, I'll store my CQD Mark 1 in the open position, and the ZT300 in the folded position.....because the ZT300 doesn't actually use a spring, it uses a metal torsion bar to emulate its Assisted opening......you can't go wrong storing it the way the manufacturer shipped it, right? Any more input is welcomed....I just want my $$$ blades to be in the best condition possible.

This same argument takes place all the time with Semi-Automatic pistol magazines.

The consenus I seem to notice is that springs are ok tight or loose. It's the in and out that that works them over so I would think the deployment and subsequent closure is what would wear the torsion bars or springs out. Most knowledgeable people in the magazine arena seem to think keeping them loaded is no different than keeping them empty . . .

The only time it would make a difference is if the knife is an automatic.
If automatic store with blade out. Now if it is an in-and-out type out-the front auto, it makes no difference. That spring is loaded one-way-or-the-other.
All the assisteds I have are stored blade closed.
Side opening autos are stored blade opened.
Front opening, one way only are stored blade opened.
Front opening, in-and-out type stored blade closed.
Manuals stored blade closed.

I agree with ^

I store all mine open for display purposes.

I have one OTF, a Microtech Ultratech and I store it with the spring 'uncompressed' by opening it and then holding the blade and firing it in the closed direction allowing the blade to have no pressure on it either way, which I believe leaves it 'uncompressed'. I have mixed feeling about most autos however if they are a side opener with a leaf spring, like the Microtech Terzuola DA, I am 100% sure that storing it in the open position is the best thing to do. It is probably not as big of a deal with a torsion or compression spring.

A properly heat-treated spring on an auto should not be impacted by being stored in a compressed position. I am stealing this from (I think) Bill DeShivs: think of the leaf springs on your automobile; they are under compression most of the time.
This is a common "discussion" in the auto knives forum.
all da best,
rats...

^ yup some auto enthusiasts think its best to put the vehicle up on blocks, to let the springs "rest". Then there are those of us who get a half million Km's out of our trucks by using them every day....hahahaha
