Storing folders open??

Is there any mechanical reason not to store/display folders in the open position?

I've come upon a set of old microscope slide boxes that are just the right size for my custom folders.
Leaving the blades open would make them fit better.
I'll redo the slotted wooden dividers that held slides to fit each knife and line it all with felt.

Let me know if it's too good to be true.

Thanks!

I would say that open is the best way as it will release any tention on the locking mechanisms. I believe all folders eccept back locks will loose lock tention if stored close for a very long time.
Just my theory and probably only matters if we are talking about centurys of storing.

storing open is almost always the better way, especial if there automatics or assisted,

I always store my autos open but not the others. I have not noticed a difference.

Springs won't weaken or otherwise be harmed by storing a folding knife either open or closed. If the spring does somehow degrade or fail, it's because of a manufacturing defect (bad heat treat, usually), and not due to how the knife is stored. With slipjoints and most locking knives with backsprings, as well as most assisted openers, most of the real tension on the springs is in the mid/half-open position anyway. The tension is always less when the blade is either fully open or fully closed. Automatics might be an exception, as they maintain spring tension in the closed position. But, as stated earlier, if it's a quality knife, that shouldn't be an issue either.

To summarize: probably does not matter but open is defenately not worse then closed.
The subject has been thouroghly discussed in the auto section of this forum, the conclusion was: does not matter.

hehe... i never got around to asking those questions. i deduced that lock backs are relaxed in either open or closed position while frames and liners relax in open. bolts and axis locks don't mind either.

Obsessed - I hate to hijack a thread, but couldn't email you. Can you tell us what that beautiful knife is in your avatar?

Sorry for the sidetrack!

Thanks.

That's my Case T.B. 5339 SS Sowbelly stockman (2006). One of my favorites. Thanks for the compliment. :)
