Storing knives in basement

Just wondering if there is potential problems with storing my blades in my basement (de-humidifier runs in the warmer months)? I have them in an old dresser, cant really put them anywhere else at this point- just moved to a new house. I am concerned about rusting I guess. I assume the best thing to do is wipe them down with some oil while storing? Thanks

Surplus ammo can and rust inhibiting paper. Desicant packs remove the moisture from the air in the sealed box, but they concentrate the moisture and will badly rust any steel with which they are in contact. You can find the ammo cans at most gun shows or surplus stores. The rust inhibiting paper can be ordered from Brownells.

I've heard that uncooked rice in pantyhose makes pretty good dessicant packs. But then again, I live in CO, so I'm not real good dealing with moisture (not much here)...

Yeah, up here in Alberta the humidity is sitting on the ground and we have to push it around. Sometimes it makes you wonder why anything is stainless.:p

Yeah, if you don't mind the itching and chafing. Me, I just gave up on pantyhose altogether and store my knives down my socks.

On a more serious note, I've also heard of a container of rice being used to restore electronics devices that were dropped in water.

Take an air tight container, fill with rice, bury device in the middle, then wait a few days.
Supposedly the rice absorbs moisture so readily that it sucks any water out of the air very quickly.
Going by that a knife should be sealed in with the rice. Such as in a nice flat tub that would fit in the dresser drawer.

That's a great idea. I've seen my mom do something similar with preserving dry foods and salt by adding rice grains in the package but never thought to use it as cheap desiccant. I'm going to try it.

I would say a basement is an excellent storage area if like mine its dry and below ground enough that the temperature is constant year round. No heat, cold or sun light damage. I store my custom steel frame bicycles in the basement and all are perfect after 20 years or more of storage.

Because my basement is below ground and has a greater "possilbilty" of flood in my house. I store things off the floor of the basment in plactic containers with desiccant just to be sure ; )

For long term, I'd use wax to coat the blades -unless you can still find a tub of RIG grease.

Laying a sheet of rust inhibiting paper in the drawer, or better-yet, wrapping each knife blade with some would work best.
