Storing Knives

I'm just getting started collecting knives, buying what tickles my fancy at the moment, and hope to expand to a few custom or hand made knives soon. My question is this - so many of you have LOTS of knives, so how do you store/keep them? Do you keep them in their original boxes, some sort of display case, or someplace where your wife can't possibly get a full count (GGGG)? Thanks for any advice.

Are you planning to use these knives or keep them in mint condition?

Gollnick makes a good point ,mate. Take a minute and figure
out what it is you like , and why, then go slow or you'll wind
up with a bunch of "drawer knives" that your wife will enjoy
reminding you of. Focus, Focus, mate. You'll enjoy the hobby
much more.

How to store them?? Well, as you learn the "and if's & wherefores"
about knives you'll develop you own methods as you go along.

Enjoy the knife hobby, mate. It's mans oldest tool:)

Originally, I kept them in there boxes and wouldn't even buy or trade for a knife without a box as this went against my system, Then I went online and bought about 5 of these cheap displays. They are large enough to hold about 9 or so knives and still look good. They have real glass fronts with a cheap white cotton susbtance inside. I paid only $4 a peice for them and keep all my knives in them except the few I use as EDC's. I still keep all of there boxes of course in a large box in the closet.

I will most likely use these displays for some time until I can afford a huge wooden wall mounted display case with velvet liner.

For me, I use less than 10% of my knives. So once I recieve one, I decide if its a user or not. IF not, I take it to the sharpmaker for a little touch up, Oil and clean it real good, Then rearrange these cheap displays to accomidate the new purchase.

There are a few members on here that I have seen posted picture of there cases, drawers, and displays. They are unreal. But for now, I will have to go with the $4 alternative.

Thanks for the replies, so far. Some will be users, of course and some will be kept mint. For now, I have users, albeit very light duty. Mostly pocket carry (I work in an office). For now, I put them back in their boxes & store them in my dresser drawer. However, I can see where this will not be too practical after a few more knives. My EDC sits on top of the dresser.
As far as focusing...I'm not so sure I want to right now. I buy what appeals to me for both looks and quality. I have bought a Chive, CRKT, Spyderco, Schrade, Buck...you get the idea. My next purchase will be a William Henry (for my birthday next month). I'm driving to visit my son next week in Tenn & will be going right by the Smoky Mtn Knife Works so I plan on stopping to make a buy there. Whatever appeals to me (probably a SOG or Benchmade AFCK)!

Big steel box bolted to the concrete with 1400lb anchors. A bunch of 1" steel bolts help keep the door on once it's locked. I want to make damn sure that when I come home, the good stuff is still here (as well as the wife's jewelry, the insurance papers, etc).

I keep the EDCs (only 4 knives in EDC rotation)on an easily accessible shelf when the safe's open (when I 'm home) and keep the collectors, or sale/trade fodder in their original boxes. stuffed towards the back. I have a problem though, it's about time for a larger safe!

Ronsec, Knives are as personal as your choice of a wife or a favorite wine.;)

Pick the right one and it's a joy for life:D Pick the wrong one well.....you get the
picture. . By focus I mean pay attention to yourself. Very soon one type or
kind of knife will appeal to you more than any other bescuse it's .........you. :D

If a person buys knives willy nilly they waste valuble time and money from what
they will really want. :)

Oh yeah, watch out at SMKW ......You'll have severe overload of choices. :D :D

Enjoy, mate:cool:

I went to Sears and bought a Craftsman toolbox that is black and has 16 drawers. The drawers have ball bearing runners and mats to protect the knives. In the uppermost compartment is the White Lightning,Sharpening stones,Marine cloth, etc.It holds all 150 of my knives and keeps them secure.

Thebadguy - Do you have a source for the cheap display cases? I will look into them, although I think the tool box idea is better for me as I only would have one unit to put someplace and can lock it up from the grand kids.
Jmxcpter - I thought of a safe, too. They're just so darn expensive !
Of course, you get what you pay for.
Tightwad - I couldn't agree with you more. I already find myself leaning towards smaller folders and then more towards a gentleman's type. Small, elegant, & sheeple friendly (I realize the SOG or AFCK don't fit that description, but I "need" them !).
ThePsychologist - excellent tip ! One I hadn't considered, and will probably use. Seems to be my most cost efficient option for now.

Thanks, guys !

I bought them online through a link to a similar thread. Hopefully a gold member can use the search feature and post a link, I would like to have it again myself to get a few more. They are definatly not bad for the price. I know that Smoke Mountain has the same ones. But they are over twice the price. I may be wrong but I think Gollink was the one that posted the link. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Indian River, The first link provided was the one that hooked me up. They are real nice and have a 800 number for ordering.

I store mine in a separate room. The ones I use I keep in rolls loosley opened. The ones in my collection I keep in display cases Ive made. I have ventilation holes (not visible) cut out of the back of the cases (covered by felt). The ones I store I have in a rubbermaid box that I also have a a salt canister in. I also use a dehumidifier in the room to keep down on the moisture. The room temperature I keep around 72 degrees. with all that said all knives are coated with tuf-glide.

ThePsychologist has best suggestion so far, I'm thinking.

THough for my personal use, if I keep going way I am my knives will get a 12 long gun gun safe and the ugns will get something bigger, cuz the gun safe is full and I'm still getting mroe knives and guns. :)

My deal is not to display my knives but protect them and also have easy access. Each morning I unlock the toolbox and select my daily carry depending on what I'm going to do.They are organized according to function.Long gone are the days of knives in the "sock drawer".This morning was to be an Emerson Commander Black Blade G-10 Plain but became a Benchmade McHenry & Williams Large Axis Lock Black & M2 Blade Combo 710. Who Knew?

I bought a small Stack-On gun cabinet, about 2'x 2'x 1', oil the knives and stack them up in their boxes, and fill the spare space with dessicants. Seems to work really well. Definitely won't survive a fire, but at least it keeps anyone out who's not real serious about getting in.
