Storing our knives

I saw an early post and wanted to revisit the topic. Seems to me storage would be similar to guns. Cool, dry, storage. I have a dehumifier in the room where my safes and closets are. The idea is to keep the climate relatively the same year round and keep moisture out. I set my dehumidifie at 35-45%. I also keep a cigar humidor in the safe for periodic readings. Never had a problem. I put a light coat of oil in and on the metal of my guns.

I saw one post about putting knives in the plastic they came in with oil. I hate plastic. It doesn't breathe, which means possible sweat, though I'm sure the oil would prevent that. Oil, to me, seems messy. When wrapping up Lionel trains for storage, each train car gets wrapped in butcher's wax paper, with the ends open. This way, air circulates and the paper (being wax) will never stick to the sides of the train cars. Airtight is instant death IMHO.

Another idea, which was given to me for tools left in an outdoor shed, is Bostik Topcoat Tool Surface Sealant. I was told you simply spray it on, buff to shine, and it dries, you can't feel or see it. It's a pertoleum based product.

Any thoughts on that?

The system your using appears to be doing fine. I have carbon knives stored in the basement for about 6 years. I forgot they were there & thought I would check them out. Fearing they would be rusted horribly. To my surprise, they were like new. I had coated them with vasoline before storage & wiped off the access so that only a very thin coat remained. I also used the open ended wax paper to wrap them.

I store most of my blades in a large display case with a light coat of hoppe's gun oil, it works very well and I also have some dessicants randomly placed in with them. Never had a problem with rust.
