This is the safest, and most practical storage solution for your gear short of buying a heavy safe that is bolted to the ground. This will cost you about $250 dollars. Well worth the money to protect your gear and keep it available, moveable, in perfect condition, and ready to use.

This is what recommend to use. Waterproof, durable, and air tight.*** For all storage of outdoor gear and valuables. The foam can be cut with any serrated kitchen knife to your needs, as well as completely removed. Areas can be cut in the foam in the lid and bottom foam to insert flashlights (AAA Maglights), tools (Wrenches), and small knives. VERY durable case, completely waterproof, THICK heavy duty plastic. Pressure relief valve for pressure equalization, so it will be fine if it is shipped in a plane. This case can literally be dropped over twenty feet, have tree limbs fall onto it, and survive a hurricane and be left outside for a month. When you open it, your gear will be in the same condition that it was in when you put it into the case. The only problem is there is no standard way to lock the case up.... So a solution to this is two 1/8 inch "U bolts" with four 1/8 inch metal and rubber washers to attach on either side with a nut and a wing nut. End nut, washer, rubber washer, Hardigg, rubber washer, washer, nut. Mark and drill the holes, and make it permanent by liberally applying an Epoxy or Gorilla Glue.

**Place the U bolts in the best position to fit a bike lock or a master lock. Place where ever you would like on the box for the best convenience and security.

DESSICANT*** Use at least 60-100grams for your hardigg, this will repel water and keep your box moisture free. Dessicant absorbs and displaces humidity and moisture in a confined area. It will pull the water from the air into itself so your gear stays dry and rust free. You can recharge these in an oven and reuse them. Definitely worth buying. Paired with oil, your gear should never rust.

You metal goods are secure, easily moveable, moisture and air tight, controlled and safe. You will never worry about them again.
Now for your small gear that can't be wrapped in a cloth or bandanna or rubber banded or secured in the foam....
You don't want your folding knives banging around against each other. This will scratch them up and destroy finishes or worse...

For your loose folding knives and small objects (wrenches, clips, screws, handles) Use bags of some sort to keep them from banging around and scratching. (A head shop is really the best place to find bags of all different sizes. You can also find bags in bulk at places like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and sowing specialty stores as well. Either ziplock or some bag that is the perfect size. Buy a lot of plastic bags. You will be grateful to yourself later for doing this.

For bigger storage needs go with a larger hardigg. Plano makes storage boxes that are great for gear in larger hardiggs (Tackle boxes:stackable)
You can store your BoB's and survival/hunting gear in these along with valuables and anything else you may want to take with you...
Feel free to post any storage ideas here. Any advise would be helpful and appreciated.

Another similar solution which is a bit easier to set up is a Pelican case. They have pre-scored foam so you can just poke out the sections that will fit each knife, and keep each one totally secure. That makes it very easy to just slot in each new knife as you acquire it, as long as you plan your spacing properly ahead of time. The cases are totally waterproof and extremely durable (they even have a pressure release valve for if they sink to the bottom of a body of water). They may not be quite as tough as a C4 crate, but they don't exactly need to bombproof for the average user.

This is one of the more common storage methods I've seen on these forums, and I've been using a Pelican 1550 for the last year. Great value for $120, with enough room to store at least 60 folders with double- or triple-thick padding between them. It also easily fits even my largest Balis with 5" handles without needing any modifications to the bottom foam slab.

Regardless, your solution looks badass as hell. Very cool solution for the inevitable storage problem that eventually arises for all serious knife collectors.

Thanks for sharing AMG 137. That looks like a great box. Pelican makes some really nice stuff. I bet it would fit a couple 40g desiccant tins perfectly. Beautiful stuff.:thumbup:

Those foam boxes work great west of the mississippi and up north...but in the humid deep south even with dessicants they are rust makers and humidity/moisture trappers. So terrible for long term storage here.

I've been using the Pelican 1450 to store all my folders. I was able to make room for 84 knives in each one, but that's just leaving 1 row dividers between everything. 5" Balis would be to tall to stand up in it though, it'll handle BM Contego, AFCK, Morpho, but that's about the max.

Good ideas, but I got this safe at Tractor Supply Co. for around $300 on clearance... and it's full! This one isn't bolted down (full of ammo and too heavy for anyone to lift). The other two upstairs (full of guns and knives) are bolted. For such a low price, I had to buy more than one:

Looking through that case actually made my heart race! Nice collection man. I've had good luck with the pelican cases as well.

Pretty nice. There is a Tractor Supply near me as well, that's what's up. I didn't know that they sold safes. Maybe ours is just smaller?

Impressive. Looks about perfect. Thanks for sharing.

I removed all the side panels of foam from my hardigg, and kept just the foam in the lid and the thin piece that covers the bottom. It makes the container way more spacious. Actually the "storage structural foam" in most pelican / and all hardiggs wont trap moisture like you would think. The stuff in hardigg containers from pelican is a harder rougher kind of foam that doesn't tend to hold moisture like the memory foam like junk that you get in gun cases. It is used by the military for storage in climates just like that.. You may need to get 200+ grams of desiccant though and recharge every 2-3 months. The desiccant pulls all that moisture into a container where it is trapped. I wish I could let you touch the structural foam that came with mine, and let you leave it outside in the dew overnight alongside some of the foam that has the density of memory foam that is in most gun cases in 6"x2" rectangles. The other stuff is just junk. In the morning I bet you could literally ring the memory foam like stuff out and fill a shot glass with the moisture at least, and the pelican structural foam wouldn't squeeze at all or hold near as much moisture.. The structural foam would have far less actual moisture in it and disperse it much faster in the sun or open.. Just FYI.

We have cases at work that appear to be from the same manufacturer. The plastic is very durable, so far, and has survived several cross-country drives in the rear of pickups and cargo trailers.

I don't like the idea of my gear being in an airtight container though. Maybe freeze-dried food packs or supplies for the vehicle, but nothing long term that would be susceptible to rust or mold.

Nor would I keep a knife collection in anything portable that could be carried away by thieves.

That's a good point. What about even keeping them all in the same place? It's not difficult to stash these small items all over the place for ready access.;) But I suppose with a collection, the idea is to collect them in one spot.

You could have five hundred fire safes bolted to the floor, each one containing one knife. :D

Nothing like a conversation starter!! I guess out there you don't have to worry about the sub-floor.:D
