Here are some pictures taken by a friend from the recent Long Island Nor'easter. Mind you, this damage was light. Unfortunately I do not have a set of "before" pictures which would show the dunes that formerly existed in fron of these homes.

I have no sympathy for fools who build on the water like this, and note that the storm damage to the dunes which were (formerly) in front of these homes was light. This is much less damage than that which has ocurred here in the past, and much lighter than that which is to come.

Stephen Flynn in his excellent book "The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation" writes that our government must no longer subsidize the insurance that encourages this type of development, and I agree. If you build here then plan on rebuilding at your own cost. THAT is the price you must pay for your folly and hubris.

A nor'easter (also northeaster; see below) is a macro-scale storm whose winds come from the northeast, especially in the coastal areas of the Northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada. More specifically, it describes a low pressure area whose center of rotation is just off the coast and whose leading winds in the left forward quadrant rotate onto land from the northeast. The precipitation pattern is similar to other extratropical storms. They also can cause coastal flooding, coastal erosion and gale force winds.
