What's the G&G Guru's opinion on them? I feel that I need to have one--I'd really like to spend around $30. I've heard mixed opinions on them--so what do you guys like?

K&G, I have tried 4 models in the last couple of years, & the Brunton Helois seemed to be the best of the lot. Downside will be hard to find one around $30 except maybe on the Bay. Optics Planet & Cutlery Shoppe seem to have the best prices, usually around $50-$55 when I bought mine last fall. This thing is almost bulletproof in the wind and rain. Used it in some really adverse weather conditions last year, didn't fail me once. Hope this helps.
Be safe.

my experience with "storm-proof lighters" is that by and large you get what you pay for. the only one I've owned that was worth carrying was my Helios, the others either fell apart, didn't hold enough fuel for more than a few seconds, or had other major flaws. that said, I haven't tried them all, but they were in that 30$ range mostly. zippos work well if you keep them fueled. but I also don't carry either of those anymore I'm going to stick with bic, matches and fire-steel. YMMV

anybody know about Brunton New Firestorm

mr2blue, this was one of the four I tried along with the Windmill Delta, Windmill 362, & the Helois. The Brunton Helois was about $15 more, but last year we were camping in the dead of winter, and at times there were winds in excess of 30 to 35 mph. The Helois never once failed to light, & we did not have to put up a wind block per say for it to work. If the lighter is going to see a lot of use, this would be my route to go. Be safe.

Thank you for your concise input, JUST1MOR.

Looks like I'll be saving up. :)

I used to use one of these for many years.

I even used it on ski lifts in howling blizzards and it always lit my smokes, fuel lasted a long time, and the unit was well made.

I haven't owned any mentioned above, but I have considered a quality lighter of this type in the past. I like the Brunton Helios, but would also consider the Windmill Delta for a similar price.

Brunton Helios has been serving me for a while now. Just today I dropped it into a few inches of slush getting out of the car without realizing it. When I did back track (20mins later), it lit on the first try.

Its taken its share of drops and been for a swim a few times and has never not lit on the first try...

I bought a Windmill Trekker about 2 weeks ago, and the thing is fantastic. No trouble filling it, and it has, as of yet, never failed to light. The price tag was about $45.
