Stowing Cordage

Every few months, someone either asks or posts about how to best stow cordage. This afternoon I was outside watching the grandkids play and decided to do a How To of my own. I learned this method from an old NCO in the army nearly 20 years ago. I've never seen it posted anywhere. This is about 100 feet of 550 cord which will never tangle and is easy to pay out. Even with the help of the grandkids and their cat it took less than 30 minutes to tie this up :D

Start with a chain sennit about a foot long.

Coil the sennit into a ring.

Continue the sennit, but it is tied over the ring. It sounds screwy but it will make sense with this video.

Continue building the sennit on itself until you are out of cord. This is about two passes over the original ring.

Here's how easy it is to pay out.

The resulting ring of cord can be stored nearly anywhere without any tangling.

This is the method that I use. Does not tangle and you can unspool lengths that you need very easily and re tighten as needed.<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lYEJS73nnKM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lYEJS73nnKM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This is pretty much the way I learned to do it back in the Boy Scouts, and its always worked for me.

Pretty simple and straight forward.
