Dear STR hope you are well

I just had one quick question regarding the clip of the ATR.

It is incredibly tight and won't even come off my jeans pocket without using considerable force. Please advise on what i could possibly do to fix this problem.

take care

When I owned one of the ATRs myself I noted the same thing and I believe I stated in a post somewhere that the darn clip held my pants up with more tightness than my suspenders! It did not make me very happy the way it tore up pant pockets quick either.

On mine I simply wedged that pocket clip up on the bottom of it and with a gloved hand pryed that thing up until it stood off the body of the folder enough to allow it to slide on and off my pocket easier. It bent rather than break which I expected but I knew in the event that it did break that I'd be able to make another for mine. Its probably not the best or the only way to do this and it may not even be adviseable but I was mad and just tweaked it really quick giving it a good tug up. In that case it fixed it up for me. I did have to retighten the screws of the clip after that though.

I'll throw this out there for you if you try it. In the event you break the clip mail the broken pieces to me minus the screws and I'll make you one using the same holes so you can just screw it back on there for a very special one time deal. :D I won't need the knife that way. Don't break it just to get it but if it did for some reason snap instead of bend I'll fix it up for you to a better grip than that one has for sure.

I see you are in Canada. We might be able to find someone here stateside that can loan me their ATR long enough to copy a clip and mail it to you if that happened. Mine bent easily though. Just don't kink it by getting carried away with it and you should be fine.

thank you for your advise i think i'l bend it tomorrow since i still want to hold onto that new knife nib shape for atleast one day. It becomes a true user starting tomorrow :D. May i ask since your the foremost authority on mods around here and also you do some wicked work on Spyderco. Would you be able to make another maybe a low rider clip for the ATR. My email address is , and i would very much appreciate if you could send me a cost. thank you and i appreciated the quick reply to my thread.

I might need to look at the clip view on that one again. It seems like I have done at least one though. I just don't recall how far apart the spacing is on the two widest set screws on that clip. It has to be wide enough to allow the clip to fold over and get the screws in place and a torx driver there to screw them down on the two far set ones. The middle one I don't reuse.

I'd have to see it. I'll see if I can find some pics. In the mean time feel free to post one of it on a flat bed scanner clip side or something.

Thanks

Well STR i have to hand it to you You must have a magic ball lying around i broke the clip  after trying to bend it. I don't think i even used that much force at all and it snapped. Hopefully the offer is still good cause now i definitely am gonna need some help. Where would i go to get your address so i can send you the clip.

thanks again

Let me know when you get this and I'll edit it out after.

Hey STR

The clip is in the mail, and there is a letter in it as well. It basically says that whatever the shipping out comes out to please email me back and i will paypal it to you. Just didn't want to send money through the mail. thank you once again

No problem. I'll let you know when it arrives. Actually I figured it was already in the mail but this is fine.

I just recieved your broken clip this morning. I'll try to get a new clip made up for it here shortly and get it out in the mail to you ASAP.

Thanks

I got one knocked out for you today. This should go right on there.

EDIT: Its on the way to you as of this morning. 17 Oct/07

I know. And I apologize for giving you bad advice. I should have known better than to advise you to try to bend it. I feel bad that it broke, but I feel worse still that it caused you to have to go so long without carrying your folder.

It cost me $8.55 to mail it back to you there in Canada but this one is on me. I feel its the least I can do for the trouble you got out of it. Oh and by the way, the old clip is in there with the new one in separate baggies wrapped up good.

Bravo STR! For those who don't know, this is typical of the honorable and gentlemanly way he operates.

Do you think a clip like that on one of my Buck 110's would, by slipping a small split ring into the uppermost hole, provide a lanyard (fob) option? The other holes would have screws through them. Then, the lobe on the top would have to bent outwards very, very slightly--providing just enough space for a split ring to be installed and move freely

Sound feasible?

Or perhaps the upper hole could be enlargened slightly, then a small, double-faced eyelet could be put through it. Then paracord, or leather thong, could pass through the eyelet and not suffer abrasion as it would if it passed through a hole in titanium. This would simplify the fob, and preclude the need for a split ring.

Or would a lanyard attached to a titanium clip (which is screwed into brass) cause too much strain on the bolsters, and strip the threads on the clip screw holes?

Just more whacky speculation in my tireless pursuit of a lanyard on a 110.

I doubt it would be a problem but it may require your checking to insure that the two remaining screws go down deep enough to secure a nice bite. They just need to be in an 1/8" or so but if not I'd suggests letting me re thread a hole and use a better deeper seating screw.

It will probably be fine anyway but sometimes upward stress can force the screw to back up some. I've done this on some Emersons and other makes by bending the clip some to get it tuned to not be so tight and then noticed a screw or two loose.

If nothing else just make a habit of checking the two remaining screws for proper tightness with a lanyard going through it.

But personally I think I'd be more inclined to drill a third hole in the middle just below the second bend as I did on that last Buck 110 from Cabelas that I posted here. This way you still have all the screws in there and you can tie to the clip to secure it ok.
