Straight edge vs 50/50

What do you think about the usefulness of the serrations on a 50/50 type edge?

I do have a serrated blade that's occasionally useful for some things, but I prefer a smooth edge for most general use. I would be concerned the serrations would actually get in the way when using the straight portion (catch & tear when I want a smooth cut.) I'm wondering if anyone thinks the small amount of serrations on a 50/50 blade, starting way up at the handle, and ending half-way down the blade length, are really useful, or if that's just to make someone happy if they can't decide which they want, or can't afford 2 knives? ANyone's experience?

The first good folder I bought was a combo AFCK. I wish I would have gottent the plain edge :) At least I learned a lot.

Yes, serrations are great for the really fibrous stuff, like plants and rope ans stuff. Unfortunately, I don't cut that kind of stuff a lot, and having 4" of plain edge would have served me MUCH better than having 2" of plain edge and 2" of serratiosn that only see occasional use. Since you have a serrated folder, get a plain edge folder and carry both.

For every day carry, I find a folder with a rougher edge (i.e. grey sharpmaker stones) does very well on fibrous material too, and most other chores.

Ok,I'll go first.Your going to get alot replies form guys who don't care for serrations, and 50/50 even less.I however take the other side,I like 50/50.Now I admit I buy mostly plain edge now,but I always carry at least one 50/50.

I carry on the job a 50/50 710 or CQC7,and up untill recently a Spyderco Rescue,'cause no matter what i may cut during the shift I know at the end of the day I can still at least "saw' though with the serrations. Also if I have to cut something that really calls for another tool, but all I got is a knife I feel I have a better shot with the serrations.

Some feel that with the 50/50 you don't have enough of either.I have not found that true for MY use.I have gutted deer, cut rags, done food prep.,cleaned fish, cut rope, cardboard, hose, belts, cut the clothes off a man who was hit in the head with a hatchet with my 50/50's,can't say I ever had a problem.(unlike the guy with the hatchet in his noggin);)

Sure there not for all knife tasks,I would not choose one to scrape hide, but for 90% of my knife uses their fine.:)

Well I guess I'll go second.;)

I guess I'm about in the middle of the road. I like having the serrations in case the regular edge gets dull after much use and I need to saw through something (like Lone Hunter). It's come in handy quite a few times, which is why I keep carrying my CS Voyager (primary) and Spyderco Delica (back-up) everyday. Most of the time, the serrations are a little annoying, but it's nice to have the option.
