Straight Handle vs Angled Handle

So I would like to get a large chopper.

Either find a NMFSH or order the ASHBM.

Which one would you pick ?

The only big Busse knife that I've got is the NMFBM...... Love the curved handle on That one.... Very comfy:thumbup:

ASHBM for me -- 5/16ths thick -- 11 inches -- and beautiful full height flat grind

But what does it matter -- you'll talk yourself into getting both sooner or later :)

You really have to try them and see for yourself. Angled, Fusion handles are my preference by far.

You should really try and get a feel for the kind of grip you prefer.

And that's hard to do without buying one of each :P

I think it all depends on usability preferences. Try one and see how it goes. If you stick with one without trying the other, then you are a stronger person than I. :)

I agree with everyone that you really need to try - it's a personal thing. I have read that the straight handles can cause 'pinky pinch' but I've never tried one so can't comment. It probably depends more on your hand than the knife's handle.

For me though, although I've never tried a big Busse straight handle, I have used a few other big knives with straight and angled handles. The Magnum Fusion handle is by far the best I've ever used. Nothing else even comes close for me. I have chopped a lot with my HHFSH, sometimes extensively, I never wear gloves and have never suffered any discomfort from the grip. I find I can chop for longer with this handle than with a straight handle without my wrist aching, and it's better at it.

I have a rather long post in this thread about how you can use the Fusion handle:

I have both the NMFSH and the ASHBM. I personally like both. The NMFSH is a bit clunkier feeling than the ASHBM. The ASHBM feels much lighter in the hand and I haven't had any pinky bite issues.
There was a post upon the ASHBM release stating how they fixed the pinky bite issue. For a comfortable flat out chopper I'd vote ASHBM but the NMFSH isn't quite as long and I enjoy using it to do "some" finer work. It doesn't shine at feather sticking but it can be done.

Snagging a ASHBM will be easier since its currently offered and probably cheaper than what you'll find secondary NMFSH prices. As for Fusion vs Straight handle like the others have said its just something you have to try I love both.
Good luck with your choice you really can't go wrong though.

I prefer the straight handle on the ASHBM. Its thinner handle scales are easier for me to grip, but the NMFSH handle isn't by any means too thick or uncomfortable to hold. I agree that either knife would serve you well.

Also, the Fusion handle is a tad longer:

Feathering wood is an individualized skill and the knife being used shouldn't be blamed for poor results. In skilled hands the NMFSH does amazing feathersticks:

And so does the ASHBM:

I think the Fusion handle looks cooler but prefer the feel of the Straight handle. I owned and sold the NMFSH. Incredibly solid, beefy knife but pretty long for fine work and a bit heavy and short-ish (compared to several other Busses) for chopping. The ASHBM is my favorite big Busse -- incredibly comfortable in hand, long, and yet not overly heavy.

All good points in the thread and it will come down to YOU, fit and feel in YOUR HAND!!! To tell the truth I think Zymo has the best remark ( red ) at the moment !!!

There have been a number of Basic 10 ' s up for grabs lately. Res C may not look as nice but for a user you can't go wrong.

yeah, I have also been considering a sycko 911..

But then again, I just love beauty of these knive's. Especially the curves of the NMFSH..

Fusion handle for me as well. I have been trying and trying to warm to the straight handle on the new Mistress but so far it is not working for me enough to outlay on one....

In general, prefer straight; then ergo; then fusion...Good luck in your choice.

I think you just answered your question hardtymez ;-)

I think I did too.... Just spend my money on the harder to get and harder to find NMFSH in the color I want, and suck it up..
then again, NMFSH for the collection and the Sycko 911 for a beater.. lot's of pondering... lol...
