Hey guys.
First of all, I am a newb to Razors. I dont use one to shave..if I do shave (once every 2 months, if that:D) but I come across some in my travels. I just picked 2 up, that I really liked, and did some research. One is a newer one, by Case, called a "Red Imp", its in really good shape, and hollow ground.
The other one, is really cool. And old I suspect. Its an "Joseph Elliot" and is very thick and flat ground, almost convex maybe. I also think the handle on this one is a replacement..I found the same handle on some German made razors.
Anyway, the question is..Can you use the grinds to date a razor?

the imp is a hollow grind but then again so is your Joseph but it is ground as one would call a wedge but its ground on a wheel of 12-14 inch size so its nearly flat

you can see the hone ware on the wedge top and bottom
both look to be in good working shape

nice pic ups

Thanks BB, I can see now, you are 100% right. They are both very sharp and in great shape. Thats why I picked them up, usually I find razors with some kind of nick or damage to the blade. I would love to know how old the Elliot is. Thanks, Gene

A close-up of the shank would be helpful. What maker's mark is on there?

here you go, it has the makers mark which is a- "C" over an "iron cross" over a "C" it says: Joseph Elliot , over "special silver steel"

the heavy use of the elliot suggests its much older. also celluloid was invented about 1870 & became very popular on knives & razors. most more modern razors tended to have lighter & trimmer blades, also the case appears to have plastic handles, a material that appeared much later than celluloid.

Yes,
I was thinking that the Elliot is around 100+ years old, just from the style and thickness. It is VERY well made.
I figure the Case is from the 40's or 50's..most likely, the 50's.
