Straight Razor Scale Question

I've been wanting to make a straight razor for a while the one thing that gets me though is how do the scales work, as in what stops them from letting the blade rotate freely all the way through and having the edge pop out the other side? It's the one thing I just can't figure out.

The blade is thicker than the opening between the scales the blade will not go through the scales.

Get you an old razor from an antique store and study it, that way you will have a feel for what the dimensions should be. Better yet get a razor and learn to use it that way you will have a baseline to start from.

Yep. What he said. I'll echo it, get a razor from and antique store or from the classifieds of several shaving related forums and it will all become clear in about two seconds.
