Straight razor with a nasty history

I’m fascinated by improvised weapons like prison shanks and the like, I have a few I have picked up during my adventures. But this one is by far my most creepy piece.

After looking at Charlie Mike’s tactical straight razor I went in to my box of souvenirs and pulled out one of the creepiest thing I own. I got this one as a souvenir from a very bad place in Juarez. It was in storage for about 6 years in one of the public prosecutors offices. A fellow knife lover kept this thing in his office for all this time. He told me that this thing is an actual murder weapon that was put in to evidence years ago. It’s a German made straight blade with a ring welded to it.

The ring actually makes it much easier to maneuver it if you’re using it as a slashing weapon. I don’t have any actual facts on the case this thing was involved in but my friend said that the original owner made the classic mistake of bring a knife to a gun fight. This razor is all that left of his exploits. Enjoy the pictures.

Its does give me a chill to ponder just how much thought and work went into modifying that razor, intended for one purpose only: maiming and killing people. Shudders...
There are monsters lurking in the shadows. If only Santa were as real as the Bogeyman.

That is odd. Generally one would assume that a guy would not do such mods to improvise a weapon (or would select something more suited to the task).

I do not want to go "prac-tac" here (nor am I qualified to do so), I am just saying that razors have a fairly delicate edge, and I would assume that most people capable of welding a ring to a hardened steel razor without destroying/compromising it, would also know that a razor is not a great choice for butchering (repeatedly).

Thanks for sharing...very interesting!

Gotta remember just how sharp a razor is when properly stropped, And how squishy humans are all the time. The weaponeer was probly not concerned about the stability just the scare factor and of course end result. Definitely one of the most devious weapons I've seen.

All you need to do is work in a Maximum Security prison. The shit found there will curl your hair. I have seen a home made flail, home made mace (both complete with human feces on the points-so if it dont kill you, it will infect you) , home made nun-chucks, shanks/shives, razorblades melted into toothbrush handles, serrated edged weapons & a zillion more different things, even a machete made out of a lawnmower blade (so sharp it would shave hair). Some of the worst are a sharpened angled piece of chair brace tube. Once stuck, it makes a large hole & acts as a tube for the blood to pour out VERY quickly. Even pens, pencils ect, stuck in & broke off---very nasty. The eriest thing is sitting on a block on midnights, listening to someone sharpening thier weapon on the concrete, knowing it could be for you, but not being able to pinpoint the location because of the echo of the all concrete cellblock, then looking at your watch & knowing it is time to make your rounds. As soon as you move, the sound stops. Yes sir, been there done that ! I got a few years left before retirement & can't wait.

Yup, it definitely is a horrific tool. I can only suppose that it was not a WEAPON, but rather a torture tool. (again, not going to proclaim to know anything about knives as weapons, but anyone that has thought it out to the point of modifying a razor like that probably realizes that you do not show someone a knife before a fight).

Would make a nice prop for Friday the 13tH :) Thanks for sharing, Edwood . . .

chills man, chills.

Thanks Edwood for sharing, like everyone else has said its a pretty scary piece of metal.

The scary thing is, he predated the La Griffe and all the finger hole knives that caught on for purposes similar to this...A razor without a lock is a poor weapon, but he was onto something.

Interesting that a ring was welded on and the temper wasn't damaged to the extent where the razor would snap to pieces before it ever reached the bone.

Man, you should be on the Dos Equis commercial...

Thanks for the story and stay safe, Edwood!

I know, right? That is what I am saying, it seems like more of a show (torture) piece for horrific affect than any sort of weapon...and that only makes it that much more horrific if you think about it.

I'd be more scared of a Mora, because then I'd know that the dude knew what he was doing. Honestly, that razor would cause serious damage, but why choose that fragile weapon when there are so many others which are better suited. He can only slash with it and since he had the time to weld a ring onto it for better grip (which also gets in the way of the cut), I just don't understand the choice, since a regular knife would be far better suited as a weapon. Yes, a straight razor can be sharp as hell, but a regular ol' blade which has been properly honed can be just as sharp and even a rusty, dull knife is more than enough to perform major surgery on someone. It's not the weapon which scares me, it's the sincerity of it's holder and the realization that he has the upper hand.

Having said all this, I must confess: the first time I held a Spyderco Civilian in my hand, I felt the hairs on my neck raise. That thing is designed for maximum damage infliction. It gives me the creeps.

Thing is, it only takes one hit with a straight razor to inflict a mortal wound, would barley need to use any metal braking force at all.
