Here is a razor I finished this week. It is 1084 with g10 scales. The g10 is red and black layered. The top of the spine and the tang were bead blasted and dipped in ferric chloride. The blade is about 1" wide by about 3"long.

That is a really nice razor, I love what you dont with the handle and the blade profile gives a vintage vibe.

Great job!

Home run again Charlie. I dont need to ask if its Real sharp. I know it is. Great job.

Yep, out of the park again Charlie. Your razors make me wish I could actually use one but I know I'd end up in the ER HEHEHE.

Charlie, ever since I saw some of your work at Dan Graves's "Hammer In", I have had this itch to trade my DE for a straight razor. Excellent work!

Thank you guys for the encouragement.

Darrin,Dan,

Using a straight becomes second nature after you get over the apprehension and the small learning curve. It takes a mundane task and turns it into something fun. I have never had a bad cut shaving, but I have cut myself hand sanding and honing razors.

Charlie, I have been stopping my razor and will be shaving with it in the morning. It is an antique one called the yankee clipper. Its just not near as sharp as you can get them. You ought to do a tutorial on how you do it because folks here just dont understand what sharp is compared to what you do.

I cut myself more with so-called "safety" razors than I do with straight razors. I have a very tough beard.

Nice razor! I like the modern handle material with a classic look.

I hone pretty much exactly like this guy does in his series of videos using the naniwa stones. Glen (gssixgun) is really good at explaining the process. His honing videos are great. I use some different brands of water stones but it is the process that matters most not the brand of stones.

Great link Charlie. Man those stones are high. For knifemakers, what would you think would be good grits of stones to get?

The approximate grits that I would/do use or recommend for razors would look something like this

1000- to set the bevel, establish the edge

4000- to refine the edge

8000 - polish the edge

then a leather or balsa paddle strop with .5 diamond spray or chromium oxide

Those grits will get you a good shaving edge.

The Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000 combo stones are an economical way to go.

Beautiful straight! I'm getting ready to order a grinder and I'm excited to get into making straights.

By the way, I use the same progression as you mentioned with the addition of a 12k chinese waterstone and have had great results...

How does the edge compare to one of the classic brands like Dovo? Does it pass the nail bend test? Is it a "singing" edge?

The edge, like a new Dovo or any high quality razor will shave as well it is honed. The geometry and heat treat are there. Both a well honed Dovo and this razor will deliver a baby butt smooth shave. Hopefully this razor will be a lot more fun to use and own.

I have not tried the nail bend test. I have tested the razors by shaving with them. They shave well, get very sharp, and hold their edge for a good while.

This razor is not a singing one, it is a pretty thick grind about a 1/4 hollow grind.
