Well, I recently obtained a used straight-razor. Now, I know (roughly) how to go about checking the integrity of the edge, and re-beveling and stropping it if necessary. However, I am wondering...should I take any precautions as to disinfecting it? Will soaking it in alcohol for a few minutes be sufficient?

Either alcohol or boiling water could have a bad effect on some of the older handle materials. Good soapy water and maybe a brief soak in alcohol might do the trick. Beaware that you would have to boil it for about 10 min and be sure to use the 70% alcohol not the weaker stuff.

I usually have alcohol pads with me. They do an amazingly good job cleaning gunk off a blade, like plant sap or tape adhesive. I can't imagine much in the way of germs or toxins remaining after a good swabbing with one.
