So, All ya'll knife-crazy guys that wake up in the morning and have an up close and personal encounter with bare steel, What razor do you use? Maker, style, steel? And what stone & strop combo do you have?

I'm biased towards carbon steel, and most blades I've seen are double/full hollow ground, and round tipped. Are other options in these viable?

I've heard various comments on modern stones, but most tend to say anything coarser than a 6000 or 8000 is too coarse.

So what is it that you wake up to in the morning? And do you have your coffee before or after your blade-fix for the morning?

I keep using two no-name very high carbon steel razors that I got over 7 years ago in Germany.

I have a Burrell Top Flight that was my Dad's. I have been using it for four days now. It is something I have been wanting to do for some time now, but has taken me a while to get into shaving shape, since it layed idle for about forty years.

As far as sharpening goes, I found an old razor hone at a local flea market, and used it for the first step in bringing it back to life. Then I found a couple of old razor straps, again at a flea market, but they aren't in all that good of shape.

After several months of on again, off again failed attempts, I took an old leather belt I have, and rubbed white polishing compound on it, since that is what I happened to have in my shed at the time. It took it to an edge of close to where it needs to be, but I think it can still be better, and I will probably break down and buy a good strop from "the knife center of the internet." I think that is the correct name, and maybe someone else on the forum can verify that and get us the correct address to it.

The knife center also contains much valuable information on strait razors, and the care and sharpening of them.

My first day it took me about thirty minutes of frustration, and some blood, and the end result was less than a perfect shave. I had to finish up with the old track two.

The second day was a little better, and then last night it went really well. You will literally be learning to shave all over again.

Use the "search" feature here at the forums, as there has been several good links to places dealing with shaving with srtait razors.

Be patient, take pride in learning a lost art, that was once an everyday pratice, and----oh yea, plan on bleeding some at first!
