I have long seen the appeal of the straight razor, and have wanted to get one. I am jsut getting into this and I am curious as to what are good brands of straight razors and strops. Also, what kind of technique is involved? Are there any good sites reccomended, I am planning on buying one, but don't want anything cheap. Let me know, thank you.

Be careful. I went through a straight razor phase a couple of months ago, and the first time I went at it, I was still bleeding several hours later.

You might want to get a barber to show you how, and also have them shave you a couple of times to let your face get used to it before unleashing your not-yet-skilled fingers on it.

I can honestly say that while I love straight razors for several reasons, and have collected a few old antique versions over the years, I wouldn't dare to put one of those things up to my neck!!:eek:

No way Jose'!!;)

Check out www.knifecenter.com and go to the ShaveCenter. Lots of good info about straight razors and a good assortment to buy from. I use a straight razor everyday and while it does take a little practice I think you can get the hang of it easy enough. You might want to check out the Bizmark by Dovo, only $44.95. Good quality at reasonable price. Get a hanging strop and have at it. It will take a couple of weeks for your face to get used to the razor but what a close clean shave you end up with. No safety razor can match it.

I think a few of us have gone through the straight razor stage, nothing wrong in that :D

Possibly a bit out of your way for a purchase, but for some good info you might check HERE

How about a tactical razor??? :)

I had my razor phase over 20 years ago, I had a barber friend who showed me, I bought two german razors,a Boker and a stainless Wusthoff, I don´t know but I think they don´t make them any more, I´ve seen plenty from Dovo around and I´ve heard they aren´t bad.

I also had a strop and a two sided hone form double duck, again, I don´t know if those still exist.

As my barber friend told me, if you practice on a balloon you shouldn´t have any problems.

I stopped after I got a bad cut on my fingers, never had a serious cut on my face, but I only shaved my neck and cheeks.

I went out yesterday and shopped around. I got a stolingen germany razor, I like it a lot. It feels nice and shaves very good, not that I have tried it on my face yet. I am going out Thursday to look at strops, rouge and the lather that is needed. Thanks, keep posting.

P.S. I am also looking into getting a tactical razor, one that locks open. I love the ivory colored handles, any good brands? Thanks.

Heres one that looks nice. Don't know how good it actually is, costing $22 and all. Got it anyways, I figure its sharp enough to be called a Razor, its worth $22 out of my pocket

I highly recommend you check out the straightrazorplace at Yahoo Groups. It is a discussion group like this one with over 500 members most of whom shave with their str8s. There are also quite a few collectors like myself. You can get a lot of useful info about honing, stropping, shaving, care and maintenance. Including a new video done by John West one of the groups founders. There is no reason to go out & spend $100 or more on a new razor when there are hundreds availible through ebay in shavable condition for under $25. This can quickly become as much of an obsession as knives, as my collection of over 300 str8s will attest. There are some beauties out there and it is easy to find a 200 yr old razor in shaving condition for a song. There are great carbon steel blades with MOP, Horn or Sterling handles. Beauties with molded celluliod & nickel silver bolsters. Picked Bone Keen Kutter & John Primbles that would make your mouth water. Check out John West's home page at http://users.mikrotec.com/rebel23/wwwpages/ most of these razors are for sale. John is a stand up guy and has a razor collection worthy of its own book. Lots of guys are getting back into this type of shaving & for those of you who tried it & stopped check out straightrazorplace, you may just start up again. There are newbies everyday so no worries about "stupid questions" there is no such thing.

Hi Kerry.
Although I have never bought a straight razor from Ebay, I would be a littly worried about doing so.
With their very fine (and often brittle) edges, I would have thought it might have been a bit of a gample buying a second hand straight razor sight unseen over the internet. What are your experiences of this ?

This is shaping up to be an interesting thread :D

This is turning out to be a pretty interesting thread.

Do those tactical straight razors actually shave? I'm trying to find something to shave the loose hair that fills up my shirt collar. A safety razor works but, clogs really easily.

Thanks guys!

I have a few antique str8 razors. I like the looks of that Perrin.
Any Ti handled razors out there?

Paul

Is that Master Razor Folder any good?

Just a guess, because I haven't seen one in person - I'd say no. It's cheap and knifezilla sells a lot of chinese POS knives. :barf:
