Strange... But Wonderful!

I had been looking at getting an example of the pattern for several months... See, it is the reason I got my first trapper 3 years ago; After cleaning and sharpening my Dads' old Schrade for him, I realized how much I had always loved that knife- But then looking for one, I fell in love with trappers, and one pattern led to another, and I never really got the one that I had started admiring.

I had finally gotten one about a month ago, a R.Rider- carried for a while and found out how much I really do like the pattern in use not just liked from admiring my Dads. Although just a bit bigger than my preferred 4.5" for pocket carry, it fits perfectly in the second (usually empty) slot of the spare magazine holster with my EDC gun- As a side point, since I carry in a shoulder holster, it is up off my belt; doing away with my usual problem with knives too big to pocket; belt sheaths..

This knife just screamed out to me... I HAD to have it. Beautiful example of the pattern, and from a company whose work I had been wanting an example of all year. A high end hand-made too.... That would finally cure my sudden lust lately for a custom. 3 birds with one knife buy? Sweet. ;)

The strange part you ask?

  • I prefer carbon, its 154CM.
  • As with blades, I prefer bolsters that will patina; this is 416SS
  • I really don't like long pulls or swedges; it has both.
  • I almost HATE stag. You guessed it; its stag scaled.
That said;

It is PERFECT! I Love it more in hand than I did in pics... The look, the feel, the color? Fabulous, all of it!

154CM is close enough to ATS34, a favorite stainless I have come to be very fond of in other customs I have. And if the blade won't color, the I can live with shiny bolsters... The swedges are small and tasteful, and the long pulls have yet to do the reason I dislike them; fingernail sliding in it and loosing leverage to open with.

But all of that is pure thought, after the fact.AfterI HAD to have it, and after I received it... None of it a real reason for getting it; un-needed over thinking, my mind looking for a "Why?".

And the Stag? I did say almost after all ;) .
Stag has to have certain look for me. A very certain look, other wise its as ugly as a mud fence IMO.. mostly white, no deep black wide grooves... a golden brown highlight... and some of the "popcorn" effect.. Not rough, but smooth in hand, but with some texture to grip, not unlike shallow jigging.. The pieces on this knife are, if not the best, then in the top 3 of all stag I have ever seen. That I had considered before the purchase, but not the rest of it..

To heck with my preferences, and the reasons why, I just plain wanted it. But I must say, it being one only six prototypes, with no guarantee of more of them to be made, it has brought out what little collector that there is in me..

There is no accounting for our desires. We love what we love, even if at times it goes 100% against all of our previous preferences.

Enough Philosophy... The knife; Amherst Cutlery large "Walden" Hunter;
(borrowed Pappys' pics, I have not been able to get outside in the daylight to take any of my own :o ).

Now I understand when you fellows talk about a custom folders spring side, and say "like one solid piece of steel, not seams to be seen" I thought "not possible" It's possible all right, and i have a great example of it... The fit on this is soooo clean its mind boggling.

I've always said that knives are like cars and girls..................it's a love affair with no good explanation. Nothing rational about it.

What is the "right" one for you?

You'll know it when you see it....................which makes the journey as much fun as the destination!!

Keep Care,

Pappy

That's a beauty. I remember looking at it and thinking someone was going to have a big grin on their face when they took that one out of the mailing package.

I think Pappy might have some potential if we keep letting him try his hand at this knife making thing. Just kidding, Pappy. I know it's only a question of time before I succumb to the temptation and get one of your knives. You folks are putting out some gorgeous work.

Very, very nice. I like the cars and girls analogy. You could add bird dogs and shotguns to the list, and you'd pretty much have it: knives, girls, cars, shotguns, bird dogs -- they don't have to make sense, they just have to be right. :D

Now Gary thats a beaut
Congrats on going against your usual preferences. (I'm a sucker for swedges and long pulls ;-))

Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful knife.

Congratulations.

Ice Tigre, I have always had an affinity for three blades. Stockmans with bone handles being the norm, but I have always had and still do have a small handful of knives handled in stag. I do prefer blades with swedges. I also have had a soft spot for trappers, just because of the way they look and feel. The last trapper I had was in the 70's a wood handled Rigid. But now I have a new one. Pappy, correct me if I'm wrong but is this one of your production models before you went full custom? If it is, its fit and finish is that of a custom. One thing for sure...it's in my pocket every day and it has become my favorite knife. Thanks Pappy.
Oh yeah, and Ice Tigre, that is one beautiful knife.

Hey Ice, I didn't mean to take away from your thread by showboating my knife. Just showing Pappy's eye for stag.sorry man.

Thanks for the comments and congrats fellows...

Navihawk, No worries! :) He certainly does have an eye for it... I rather like the piece on the spey side of that trapper! If they keep this up, I will own more stag than I ever thought I would. ;)

I got another one with this hunter, a 2 blade baby canoe-- I think it is also one of the limited "production" pieces, and it is 99% the fit of this hunter... its more my usual style- straight white, and I think its ivory-- Was a extremely nice gesture on Pappys' part; I was surprised by it, he sent it as a bonus 'cause there was a delay in the hunter shipping to me.-- so I don't know its specs..

I'll get a pic of it up soon, when i can find daylight to take some in. Will definately not be my last from Amherst.

My usual ritual of bonding with a new knife went well; rib steak dinner eaten with the hunter, and the little one cut up some leg of lamb last night.. :)
