Strange computer (well, maybe IE)

I've noticed in the past week or so that when I click to go to a link from some websites, like Sears, Powermate, etc. that I get a "You don't have permission to access (name of file) on this server."

Have not loaded anything new, all AVG/Spybot comes back clean.

No other strange happenings, just this.

Anyone ever have the same?

Hmmm... if it was just one website I would say the server administrator has messed up his file contexts and permissions, but if it's several...

You're not with comcast are you? If so, just check , in IE, 'tools/internet options/connections/LAN settings' and look for a proxy tick box near the bottom. If it's ticked, untick it and see if that works. You can always tick it again if it makes no difference - the settings are remembered. Might be worth checking this whoever you are with.

Alternatively, your ISP might be playing with a transparent proxy and got it wrong...

Try loading firefox and see if it happens in that.

Click Start>Run. In the run box type "CMD" and click OK. At the DOS prompt type exactly "IPCONFIG /flushdns". Press enter. This might help and even if it doesn't won't cause any trouble.

Switch to Firefox.
I switched over a year ago and haven't had any problems with it.
I had LOTS of problems with IE, i'm never go back to Microsoft.

You must not ever use the FF plugins, or have kids that like the cartoonnetwork, PBS, or Noggin pages then.

Flushing the DNS may help. Are you on a router, or direct connect to your modem (cable, DSL, or dialup?). Also, have you blocked the content on any site recently? If the issue is software based, more info like WIn version, IE version, etc would be helpful. :)

Nope i don't have any kids and i'm the only one who uses this computer so i get to control what gets installed on it.
I do use a couple of plugins though mostly video related things.
The more plugins you use the more likely you are to have problems for sure!

I'm not saying Firefox is perfect just that it is infinitely better that IE!
:D

:) Yup, and like knives, guns, and all things under god, everyone has an opinion :)

I use firefox a lot, both under Windows, and Linux, as well as a number of other Browsers. I like IE, always have. Of course, I do netowkrs for a living and I am a MCP, so I might be bais. :)

Thats true, its like that famous quote from Dirty Harry !
;)

Sounds like you are more of a pro-tech guy than me so i'm willing to concede you probably have much better knowledge about this than I.

Just in my personal experience I used IE for many years with out many problems but the last few versions i used were horrendous. I might try IE again SOMETIME, but right now the problems i had with IE are still fresh in my mind and i have not had any problems with Firefox. However i haven't upgraded to Firefox 3 yet so things may change!
lol!

If I were you, I would wait a bit, FF3 has some known issues with encryption that when you shut down or close your browser, you will have to sign back in to each web site you have open in the tabs, it still remembers User ID's and passwords, but wipes it out of cache and you have to sign back in to each site. Now for some reason, this does not happen on EVERY computer, but it does on some. My desktop at work runs FF3 fine, FF3 on MY laptop is a pain. I have started using Chrome, put out and free from Google.
Just my experience.
And information from one of the Beta Guys on FF3.
