Strange Damascus stamp on Joseph Rodgers pen knife

Hi
I recently bought a small JR&S pen knife off ebay that seems a little strange. It has DAMASCUS STEEL stamped on the main blade and SILVER STEEL on the smaller one.
The weird thing is that the main blade looks nothing like any Damascus I've seen before, looks like regular carbon steel:confused:
I'm wondering if its a fake or been modified.

The front tangs of both blades have the regular markings: No.6 Norfolk Street Sheffield and Rodgers Cutlers To Her Majesty, but there is no Star and Maltese Cross on the back of either tang. Do ALL Joseph Rodgers have the star and cross?

I think the handle scales may be horn of some type.

I hope someone may have seen something similar or can shed some light on this knife and maybe its age for me. Thanks

I was expecting to see the India/Pakistan so called Rodgers knife, but that's a real ( English )Joseph Rodgers, in my opinion the very first sort of stamping that I have ever seen in this manner on different blades stamped as such, this could possibly be a salesman sample? Jack or even try Mick ( Wellingtons ) Thread of older Sheffield's.
Every Joseph Rodgers that I have seen anyway have had the Maltese Cross stamps.

It is an interesting situation you have there. Mick (Wellington) has been quite active on his Sheffield thread lately so he should be easy to catch. I would like to know his thoughts on this one and I can think of no one better to ask. I see you are brand new here and might not know how to go about contacting him. I will point this thread out to Mick and hopefully he will chime in.

Here's a bad pic of a Rodgers Guillotine quill knife marked to HIS Majesty, Geo 4 or William 4, circe 1830. It has no cross and star mark and does have the same "pin kick" on the seconday if you look carefully (and have better eyes than I do)))). Added a better pic of the kick.

Mick Will know.

Best regards

Goins does not list those marks without the Star & Cross being present, for what that might be worth.

Unfortunately I've not seen or handled enough old Rodgers penknives to make an informed comment. I must say though at first glance the knife does look like an early Victorian Rodgers. Never seen the 'Damascus Steel' wording on a JR before. Certainly an interesting little knife.

Thanks for taking a look and letting me know your thoughts on this knife.
I've been interested in knives a long time but this is one of my first attempts to start a collection.
Glade to hear I've at least found something interesting:)

Tom, in case you did not know the Silver Steel marking on the one blade is seen occasionally and is in that location on the blade. Should lend to some authenticity. Silver Steel is when some sterling silver was added to the steel.

Thanks for the info. I did read somewhere that Silver Steel was sometimes stamped on a blade. Glad to here its in the right spot.
