Strange Patterns on Monosteel

Im an inexperienced knife maker but I’ve recently started trying Hamons. today after etching and polishing I noticed a strange sort of Damascus type patterning near the bevel lines. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what they are.​

What steel, and what are your heat treat cycles? Most likely carbide banding or carbide segregation.

It is 1095 I usually do 2 normalizing cycles in my homemade forge then bring to non magnetic followed by a quench in pre heated canola oil. of course as it’s a forge I don’t have much temp control.

I have a gas forge and use this to read temps. Be sure to buy the ceramic sheath for the prob.

Right now I don’t really have the money to spend on a pyrometer but hopefully in the near future

If you go to your image in imgur, there will be a link on the right side of the window that's labeled
BBCode (message boards & forums) and if you copy that link and paste it as your post, the picture will show up here and folks won't have to click on it and waste bandwidth by going to another site to view.
Or you could just type img (surrounded by []) before it and /img (again surrounded by[])

Looks like alloy banding to me.

That looks like the "wootz" like pattern from alloy banding.

You need to finish sanding it down to 400 grit to see how much is surface imperfections due to coarse sanding marke at quench to be sure. Then etch with FC to see what the hamon and wootz pattern look like.

The hamon looks like it dips awfully close to the edge?
