I know it may sound kind of bizarre, but I heard through some not quite reliable grapevine that Emerson is now making some sort of exercise tool to help knife users improve their hand strength. Is there any trace of truth in this rumor?

Will somebody please enlighten me.

Emerson doesn't make them, but he is selling them. They are the Ironmind "captains of crush" grippers, and are reportedly some of the most effective grippers out there. There should be more info on his site, or check out www.ironmind.com

As with all good rumors, there is usually a thread of truth.

EKI has become a dealer for the "Iron Mind" "Captians of Cruch" hand grippers.

These are not the grip strength exercisers the "Marts" carry. These are damn impressive workout tools.

Too give you some idea of what were talking about, I consider myself a fairly strong individual and I couldn't completely close the #2! (But that Bastid Matt (aka SNiPER) from Delta Knives could).

Ya gotta check out the "Emerson Challange" at the bottom of the linked page. :D

I should point out that at the Blade Show, not one person closed the #3, never mind the #4. Several very large, serious looking folks tried, but only one person even got close. He got it down to just a hair to go, but no cigar. Turns out he was the first guy EVER to close the #3, Richard Sorin.

Ya gotta try them to appreciate them.

Man I wish these were around about 15 years ago. I used to be an electrician and I worked with a guy that could mutilate the handles on any pair of pliers. Strogest grip I'd ever seen and I was no stranger to the strength world. I used to be a powerlifter. I would have loved to see how he'd have done. Me at my strongest, probably a #2. Never had a good grip.

These things are the real deal!
I've got the #1 (140lb), and #2 (195lb). Haven't bought the #3 (280lb), yet, and harbor no delusions about ever buying the #4 (365lb). They also have a trainer (100lb).
Makes a tremendous difference in grip strength in a short time.
The jump from #1 to #2 is a big one. Right-handed, I can do 30 reps w/a #1 with no problem, but have yet to get the #2 more than 7 times (only get one rep left-handed, accompanied by loud popping noises that are not coming from the gripper!). The #3 jumps up to 280lb, and must be a real monster.

I have just got a Trainer and a #1. (I ordered them last week and they managed to get out before the planes stopped :( ).

These are hard work compared to any gripper that I have used before. I have used a Heavy Tension Grip-master for some time and can crank out the reps on that with no trouble - the CoC is something else.

As they sell the products do we know if Ernie or Derek are going for Certification? :)

As a hint to the other Usual Suspects if you can do a #4 at a nominated knife show you can get a free Custom knife - time to start practicing for that full dress Rhino...... :D

Regards,

Ed

PS - it is nice to get back to some "normal" content.
