I recently added a fine knife to my collection of 2-blade Trappers, with the help of a much-respected forum member from Calgary.
He couldn't provide a lot of information on the knife,as he said it was part of a collection that he had obtained.
As the pictures show,it is more than 1/4" larger than the 94ot's and 293's in my collection. It also weighs in at 3.8 oz,where the 94ot's and 293's run 2.9-3.1 oz.
The tang is stamped Schrade/Walden/N.Y. U.S.A.;similar to the 293's,but there aren't any other markings on it,nor is there a shield.
The bolsters and nail nicks are different than others in my collection.
Looking at the scales with a 6x glass,I see pores and "grain" similar to what I see in the Canal Street Trapper that I got recently from Bill Horn.(Mr. Horn had verified the Canal Street knives that Paul Had lined up for the forum knife were genuine Argentine cattle shinbone.) Being an amateur,I'm not claiming the scales are bone, but if they are Delrin, they sure are nice.
I suspect this was a special edition of some type.but I could be wrong .

Take Care

That looks like the trapper they were offering in the cigar box classics...

To me, anyways...

Thanks,guys.
I had never seen one like it before. Now,I can what they say the scales are made of.
Ron

Edited - I looked at all the cigar box knives that I could find on eBay and they all have a shield and serial # on the bolster. This "outlaw" trapper has neither.
Can't find it on Larry's site either.

I thought that it was similar to the Cigar Box knives too, except, it is much larger.

Del,
Yes,this knife measure 4 and 3/16",where the 94's and 293's measure 3 and 7/8".
The tang bolster on this knife is larger (vertically) at the end than it is where it meets the scales and that is different than what I see on the eBay pictures of the Cigar box classics. You can see that in the photo showing the tangs of the three knives.
I've been waiting for the Tennessee poolman to weigh in with the real story but he must be still digging thru his files.
IMHO,the workmanship and finish of this knife is as good as the CSC Trapper I got last week.

This trapper is made on the same 4 1/4" frame as the TXR2 Texas Ranger trapper of 2001, with the same squared front bolster, however the TXR2 was Staglon, not green bone, and did not have the lined bolsters. The large brass backspring pin is also a match, as it the grind and profile of the large clip master blade. I can't see the mystery trapper's second blade, but on the Ranger, it is a large spey, both blades being Schrade+ stainless. The TXR4 of 2004 had crimson red smooth bone handles. I believe it is also a match for the 2001 OTC96 Classic of 2001. These had amber jigged bone handles and were limited to 500 sets. The same frame was used also for the Ducks Unlimited issue of 2001 and 2002, 2003 with oak handles as the SDU296. I believe your knife is a CSW2962 from 2004, unfinished, maybe rejected for a weak tangstamp or other flaw. The 2004 Schrade Walden Cigar Box Classics were indeed green bone, and limited to 1000 of each pattern.

So the base pattern we might say is a 296Y, or rather the 96OT. Or at least that is my theory!

A nice knife anyway you cut it!

Larry,
Looks similar from what I can see.Is it 4 & 1/8" long?
Can't see if your subject has a shield or serial number.

Codger,
Tang stamp and springs are strong. I can't see any defects but that doesn't mean there aren't any.
Do they complete these knives before adding the shield or is the scale inletted for the shield before installing shield and bolsters?
When is the serial # added to the bolster?
What do they call this type of jigging?

As to how old this knife is,Del would have more input as to whether it might be as late as 2004.

Looks like Glenn and Phil were right !

Thanks,guys,for more education! :)

Ron

It's possible it was as late as 2004 - the collection I acquired the knife in, came to me in late 2004 (Oct - Nov).

It is larger than any of the other Cigar Box knives I've had.

Ron,

The knife in my picture is 4 1/8" has a blank shield and SCHRADE WALDEN NY USA tang stamp. It is serial #215. Only one of that type of handle I have
The box is dated 2003
