Ok, so I got one. I just found out a place where I could easily buy one... after reading all the good things about it on the net - and after you guys so highly recommended it - I had to get one.
It's everything you guys said it would be: small and bright (much brighter than my new Mag-lite 3D!). The spot can not be made as tight as a Mag-lite. Actually the spot seems to be very wide. It's not dark enough yet, but I'll test it more later on.

I knew it eats lots of batteries, but I didn't know the bulbs have such a short life-time either.

BTW, seems a bit hard to get the replacement bulb out...

BUT one thing none of you told me - This flashlight stinks!. The rubber... what a smell.

Maybe I'll have to buy more flashlights too

But anyways, thanks to everybody who suggested this light. Hope the smell goes away, as it seems to be a very good light.

Smelly cat, smelly cat
What are they feedint you?

It's not your fault...

The lithium batteries stink, it's the gasses released from the cell during use...

This battery smell is normal as the DL123As have pressure release valves to stop them exploding when they get hot.

I've got a SureFure 12PM. They get too hot to handle, and sometimes smell quite strongly.

I hope your Scorpion does you proud.

Al.

P.S.
I would advise you only use Duracell DL123As as they're the best imho

No! You guys didn't get it... the light stinks - the rubber around the aluminun body! That's what stinks. (it stinks without use and without batteries... and after using the light for a while you hands smell too

Anyways, about the spot... I noticed that if I pulled the bulb just a little bit out I was able to get more control for the beam size, and I was able to get a little smaller spot. Still the spot is not as good as from Mag-lite. That's clearly because the reflector isn't a mirror like, like in Mag-lites for instance. The reflector scatters the light much more (than with mirror like reflector)... that's why even with the tightest spot there is lots of light all around. This makes the spot look much nicer though. You can't see the imperfections which are normally clearly visible.
Comparing it to the Mag 3D, Scorpion seems much brighter, but if you want to reach far away, the Mag-lite is better due it's better spot. Last night I aimed the lights to a large tree about 20m away. The smaller spot of Mag 3D gave more light in the spot when compared to the scorpion... but then again the scorpion almost lit the whole tree

Scorpion is great, but for far reaching light, maybe better choice is your Mag-lite (with the Carley lamps.) They seem to compliment each other very well. Glad to have both.

I kinda thought you may have been using really cheap and nasty batteries cos to be honest, the smell is very slight unless they get very hot.

I would call or email StreamLight cos your Scorpion maybe defective, & they may even replace it for free if you send it to them...

Flashlights with larger reflectors have tighter spots at long distance. It's important to see the difference in scale between the Scorpion and a 3D in terms of length, width, volume & weight.

I'm assuming that the Scorpion's beam is very much more white than a MagLite... Why bother lighting one part of the tree, when you can light the whole thing?! Isn't the Scorpion a "personal" light rather than a spotlight? The 3D Mag is hardly "personal" or easy to carry/hide on one's person.

No, I don't think my Scorpion is defective in any way. The rubber smells (it smells like a certain kind of rubber), I don't like it, but it is not a defect. (Hope it goes away

Scorpion vs. Mag 3D... I didn't say Scorpion is worse than Mag-lite. I tried to show how they are different - Size15s, I think you are saying the same thing. But I was also trying to say that Scorpion isn't just brighter than 3D Mag (like many internet sources claim). It is better for some things, then again for other things Mag-lite is definitely better. Mag-lite has better battery life and has tighter beam that shines farther away. You are right that Scorpion has whiter light and more total light output, which in relatively small distances is much better, (and is smaller). Why not light the whole tree? If you need to light a smaller part better.
They are different. Scorpion doesn't replace 3D Mag, but neither does 3D Mag compare to Scorpion on some ways. You need both

Don't worry that smell will go away soon. Or maybe you just get used to it

I can't smell that new rubber smell anymore, but I know what you are talking about.

Brock

Ah! So it's like the smell of some new books...Or new cars etc. It should fade with use then...good.

The right light for the right job!

There's an idea!

Al.

Brock, I think the smell goes a least somewhat away... wasn't a real complaint anyhow

If it doesn't go away, I'm afraid that my wife wont get used to it

I got mine in August and I haven't noticed the smell since the first week or so. I love it. After trying just about every flashlight under the sun and moon, this is THE number one best light that I have found and I want to thank all of the guys here and in the various tactical columns that recommended it. This is the URL for the best deal that I found at the time:
http://www.tannersstorefront.com/scorpion.htm

I also bought a couple of their LED penlights that use the AAAA batteries. They are also great. Got extra batteries for both and an extra bulb for the Scorpion.

The smell is already fading... and just when I was getting to really like it

Great light! Just yesterday used it to inspect something under my car... it just light up the whole underside of the car. Very good indeed!

Hugo.

anyone have any idea how to change the reflecter of the scorpion to a mirror one?
thanx
