A friend of mine, who is a serious motorhead, turned me on to this site:

It's easy for a gear-head to be discouraged about the state of the world, especially in times of Carpocalypse and Cash for Clunkers. But occasionally a bright light of awesome renews the spirit. Road-legal bumper cars do just that.

Yes, you read that right, these little beasties are street legal. They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in too long. There's seven of these little monsters floating around California, and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap. They were originally powered by Harley motors but they rattled like hell and Tom replace them with Honda or Kawasaki 750's and a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase. Doesn't mean we would totally rock one should the opportunity present itself. In fact, we now have only one burning desire, to see these things running a go kart track with a clown in the drivers seat. No idea where the clown came from.

I'll link a couple of pics, please visit the site for more.

I can only imagine screaming down the highway at about 90 mph in one of these, dressed like a clown, being followed by highway patrol cruisers!

I am down, but first, I need to see a full roll cage. Come one people, haven't they ever seen the results of an upside down convertible and some one's skull on the pavement at 89 miles an hour????? not a pretty site. Slap some roll protection on that bad boy to keep my head attached and I am golden!

Those are cool. That looks like a great hobby that wouldn't kill your bank account too bad.

The one thing I would be worried about is the cornering ability. Looks like they'd be easy to roll.

I think these are cool, but I would have to move to another state to run one on the road.

Well, if the antenna rod at the back was made of billet Stiffium it might give a bit of protection without spoiling the carny look. Though I would route the exhaust up it, with some mechanism for making smoke and sparks fly out the top.

Seriously - the engineering looks pretty basic - I'm sure it would be possible to get the C of G down lower for more stability.

simple to make flames shoot out the exhaust.
Add a spark plug and inject propane into the exhaust pipe.
