Strength of a Kit Knife?

Has anyone here bought a standard kit knife from any of the mail order companies (Jantz..etc...) and put it through hell? Im talking about a standard 440C blade(or some other metal), not a CPM154 or any other super metal. I was curious to how well the blades are actually made. Thanks!

The only answer to such an open question is "it depends..."

It probably depends on which kit knife you buy - there are all kinds.

Say you buy a Grohmann do-it-yourself knife kit - you'd end up with a Grohmann quality blade.

Buy a cheap chinese do-it-yourself kit, and results may vary.

Thats what I was thinking but are there some better than others without spending bigger money for the name?

I too have been looking at makign more kit knives. I have already made a few and Im starting to wonder how I know which ones are quality and which ones arent. I have only made kitchen knives and some were too thin and I just did not like.

This one I did not like, just felt too thin. I dont know how it holds up though since I gave it away.

This IRT one seemed nice, solid, came sharp. I gave it away too so I dont know how well it holds an edge. The steel type isnt even listed which I dont like, but on the other hand it does say Made in USA. Most of the other knives, except ones that say from Japan dont say where they are made or what steel.

I would also be interested in thoughts on the different kit blades out there.
