Strength of a Tek-Lok

Hello all,

I've done some searching on here without finding the answer I'm looking for. I know a lot of kydex makers use the Tek-Lok belt clips from Blade-Tech and I recently got ahold of one myself and it is definetely appealing. My question is how tough is it. It looks to me like all of the stress is actually born where the attachment screws go through the Tek-Lok and that area is counter bored to roughly half thickness. Is this a problem? Basically has anyone broken one during normal outdoor usage?

I'm very interested in using one on my field knife/psk kit which is a Cold Steel SRK with a pouch on the outside. I have ditched the flimsy nylon belt loop they supply and molded my own kydex belt loop that makes the knife ride a bit higher. The only problem is that it would be nice to be able to take the knife on and off without unthreading my belt. My main reason for this thinking is that my next modification to this knife is to attach a thin pouch on the back with a diamond shapener in it, or to permantly epoxy one to the back of the knife sheath and it would be nice to take the sheath off easily for touching up the blade.

Here's a pic of the modification. What I'm thinking about doing is flattening this belt loop and then attaching the Tek-Lok to that now flattened loop. I don't like how high the knife would sit if I attached the Tek-Lok lower on the sheath in the existing holes.

Any comments, experience, or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Charles

just walking around with it will work fine, however, i don't recommend them if you intend to keep it on you in a life or death struggle. the retention is just not there and it can be ripped off your belt pretty easily by a determined attacker.

How about a "drop leg" rig that will get the knife handle down to a comfortable level?

I have one of the small tek-loks and it seems as sturdy as other plastic pack fittings (most are Delrin/acetyl resin). They do make in insert to lock it shut. In a survival situation, the worst case scenarios that come to mind is a tumble down a hillside or a ride down the rapids and losing the knife. My SAK (redundant tool) rides in my pocket on a lanyard looped around my belt.

I'll second the "retention is just not there" comment. They are easy to get on and off of your belt, which is good, unless you don't want it to come off.I've got a kydex sheath with one for my hunting knife, for the exact reason that you mention- I was tired of rethreading my belt when I took it off. I'm really considering going back to the leather with belt loop next hunting season. If I need to go into town, I'lkl just leave the knife in the truck and the sheath on my belt.

Not a big fan of the drop leg rigs. I actually raised the height that the knife rides at with the current modification, just don't like how high knives sheaths with Tek-Lok's normally ride, so I'm going for something inbetween.

Thanks to all for the replies.
