If you use an angel grinder to cut out the knife from the steel and the steel gets red hot, does that stress the steel enough that you would have to normalize before heat treating it? That's why if you don't have a bandsaw or drill press you use a hand drill or a hacksaw?

You mean ANGLE grinder ? When you get the steel that hot( above the critical temp) you can not only stress it but cause cracking.Slow down on the grinding , you can even wet it occasionally to cool it off. After all your grinding is done it's a good idea to normalize the blade before hardening. And watch out for the morke tiden.

Oops, yah I meant angle grinder. Thought it was bad to go fast. Thanks for the info.:) Do you mean mørke tiden? or is morke tiden some knife expression I don't know of?

Depending pn the steel you are using heating up the steel like this will cause it to start hardening or it can work harden in the areas that you turned it red.I would suggest that you normalize or anneal the steel after the angle grinder before you even start to grind in the bevels of the blade, one to keep from grinding harder steel than needed, the other to keep the blade from warpping during the heat treat process.
