Stretch?

Hello all,

I have tried to search this out on the web, especially here and the Spydie Forum, but am still confused (a frequent occurrence unfortunately). I am really not understanding the difference between the Stretch and Stretch 2. I have seen some explanations that make sense, but what throws me off is the frequent references I see to a new Stretch 2 in FRN coming out. Hasn't the Stretch 2 in FRN already been out? I thought I had it figured out by thinking that the Stretch 2 had only been released in G10, but I still see old references out there talking about FRN versions of the 2. Can some one enlighten me here?

Thanks.

I've wondered this myself in the past. Best I can figure is that when they made the CF version with different clip it was referred to as the Stretch 2 by users and forumites... But not by Spyderco?? Pretty sure Spyderco referres to the Stretch 2 as the newly refined version with brown g-10. I think it's the only one with a "2" on the box. Just my guess though, hoping to hear from someone with greater knowledge on the matter!

That's the conclusion I made, but was confused by seeing so many references and reviews on FRN 2's. I think I have even seen retailers refer to them that way. When I heard that molds are being made for a new FRN Stretch 2 I was uber confused.

Your confusion is shared bud! Haha. I'm glad you started the thread, it'll be nice to have clarification. Either way I can't wait for the next FRN version to be out!!

I have really been intrigued by the Stretch and am seriously thinking about picking one up soon. I have been through three Enduras and they are just a bit big. I recently just picked up a Delica and love it, but it's a tad small for me. Despite the slightly funky looking blade shape, I figure the Stretch may be just right.

Just got my first stretch, don't know why I waited this long. Such an awesome blade!

Highly recommend it! Mine see more pocket time than anything else, great slicer, super ergonomic and to be honest I seem to be one of the few that loves how it looks too! Also really like the finger choil!

I saw that article before. I kinda like the looks of the older one better. I guess my question is really has there ever been an FRN Stretch 2 before or did everyone just call it that.

Yes, the Stretch 2 is only available in the brown G10 at the moment. Sal has said the molds for the Stretch 2 FRN are being made now.

I picked up VG10/FRN Stretch off the Exchange a while back and I like it. It looks like the Stretch 2 has a little deeper finger choil and the handle is a little longer. I'm not sure there's enough of a difference between the two for me to buy a Stretch 2 but we'll see.

Sharp Guy is right. The 2 is only in brown g10 with ZDP-189 at the moment. It was a trial run to gauge interest in order to justify the investment of FRN molds. Apparently, Sal was pleased with the response by customers. Or he just wanted it himself because the Stretch is kind of his own personal knife I believe the story goes.

I had a Stretch II, CF with ZDP189. Very nice knife to carry, super slim and lightweight, the steel is excellent though needs to be touched up regularly as you do not want to let the edge get dull.

I sold it after four years of carrying for almost what I paid for initially and replaced it with a PM2.

The compression lock on the PM2 is much preferred and the shape of the blade, much more useful.

The Stretch II is a very fine knife and if I were to get another, it would be only in the CF version. YMMV.

about a year ago! i picked up two FRN-black with VG10,at that time i heard they where going to be changing the molds on the handles,so my thought was to throw these two in for safe keeping, you never no with spyderco!could be a collecters item one day!but the stretch is one heck of a users knife,at some point i would like to get the ZDP189 version.

The price for the G10 handle version is twice that of the FRN handle knife. I think I'll wait for the new FRN molds.

It confuses me a bit too. To me, the "Stretch 2" should really be the "Stretch 3".

The original Stretch was super compact, with a 3.5" VG-10 blade packed into a handle with a closed length of just 4.25". It's only drawback was its heavy stainless steel handle with Kraton inserts that tended to loosen and come apart.

The Stretch that I consider the "2nd Generation" came out first in peel-ply CF with a ZDP-189 blade and full stainless liners. The new handle took a bit over half an ounce off the weight, but was .125" longer. The extra length was needed to accommodate the "Delica 4" style clip that was becoming Spyderco's standard 3 screw clip. However, grip area remained the same, so this version feels about the same as the original, it just takes up a bit more pocket room. A year or two later a nested liner FRN version with the same dimensions was added. This was offered originally in both VG-10 and ZDP-189 and has since been offered in Super Blue and HAP-40. More recently, the full liner handle came back with a choice of blue or black Nishijin glass scales and a VG-10 core damascus blade.

The knife Spyderco calls the Stretch 2 (which is, to my way of thinking, the 3rd generation Stretch) increases handle length once again, adding yet another quarter inch to it for a 4.63" closed length. However this quarter inch is in the grip area. This means that folks who found the handle of the first and second generation Stretch a bit too cramped, should find the new one more to their liking. For folks like me, who have smaller hands and think the original handle was the best ever in terms of size, it's just bulkier. The Stretch 2 is currently only available in G-10, but Sal has said the FRN version is in the works.
