Hey guys, been really interested in a salt knife mainly for upcoming vacation EDC but I don't really like any of the salt knives blade profile / size combos. I like the salt 2 in general but it's to small (I know, I have a delica) and i like the size of the P1 but not the blade on it. Same with the tasman, to small and I even though I like the Hawkbill it's not right for how I envision using this knife...

That brings me to the stretch, always wanted one but just never got around to getting one. Always figured it'd be a ZDP but that's also not conducive to how I see using this particular knife so that brings me to the VG10 / FRN version.

How does it hold up to salt water with basic maintenance (I don't mind cleaning a knife after each days use but I'm not about to buy a knife [for this specific task] I would need to do complicated maintenance to while on vacation). Also after vacation how will it do with me sweating on it all day every now and then? (it wouldn't be an every day EDC but I do plan to carry this same knife while boating on fresh water and doing other recreational activities exposing it to plenty of sweat.

I'm asking specifically as to its stainless qualities, I know how VG10 will behave concerning edge holding and while it's not my preference I have no issues with it.

Is there any version of the stretch, FRN or other thats linerless w/ a stainless blade steel? Maybe BD1?

Seeing as I like the S2 any other sub $100 recommendations to fit my needs? Change my mind on the P1 SE?

Everything rusts in the salt. I'd get a SE Salt something and call it a day. I tried everything else and i would up removing tea stains here and there even when i thought i rinsed it perfectly. That or something in LC200N That stuff is awesome too.

Unless you are going to be soaked in saltwater everyday then you shouldn't have any issues with the vg10 Stretch. I love that you don't even have to think about H1 but even a daily rinse will be enough to keep vg10 free of corrosion under most circumstances.

Lance, OP,

Let me introduce the Atlantic Salt, modded ala Lance!
The size is about Stretch, has choil, like Stretch.
The only drawback is no tip, but Lance has inspired me to do one:

Or like this fellow (taken from net): (edited out, he'a another victim of PB fiasco) basically a belly has been ground into the profile, making it a little like spear point rather than wharncliffe.
If you google the image it's still there, but once opened, it showed the PB notification. IIRC from the owner was Aussie/NZ, a yellow handled Atlantic Salt.

My sweat can discolor VG10 (i.e. carried IWB), pitted ZDP & M4. So having H1 is great!

Not sure how much you're going to be washing the blade but I would think it would be okay as long as you do something like dip it in water every now and then to get saltwater off. I've never had VG10 rust on me but I tend to be light on knives and I stick with H1 if I know I'm going to sweat all over a knife, like carrying it while cycling, after seeing what I can do to my multi-tools. I use an H1 for that type of use.

If you're not married to a folder, maybe consider some of the fixed salt series? The new fish hunter is a pretty BA looking knife.

Its actually the opposite, I EDC all fixed blades anymore but on this purchase I'm looking for a folder to carry IWB of gym shorts and in swim trunks and I want a folder specifically.

I will own a fish hunter eventually but not for this purchase (vacation is 3 weeks away and I have a custom that I'll need to make final payment on before then so I can only afford one more knife in time)

I use the Stretch 1 as a surf fishing knife. This is the VG10 version. I wind up in the surf for 2-3 hours and the knife gets soaked. I always rinse it off when getting back to the kitchen and have never seen any rust. It will work of you take care of it.

I took a Delica to Hawaii a couple of times. Snorkelling, fishing, etc. Rinsed it off when finished and the worst it suffered was a couple of small tea spots that came right off.

I have taken my endura4 swimming in the ocean (south Carolina) on vacation for the past 5 years. I rinse it off when I get back to the house. Never had any problems what so ever.
I recently gave it to a friend (with box). He initially thought it was new until I showed him scratches on the blade (well hidden by the finish). Regardless, he was overjoyed.
I use my HAP40 endura these days but will have to get a new ocean knife (sights are set on pacific salt) before next vacation.

I just came home from a 2 week beach vacation. My VG-10 Delica was my EDC the whole time, and I never had any problems. I never went swimming with it or anything, but at one point it was fully submerged in salt water to cut some water plant to use as fish bait. After that, I rinsed it off and let it dry. I think with diligent maintenance, you should be just fine with your Stretch.
