Wow.......I just bopped up to the Shell/beer Mart on the edge of Range 51, just about a mile from the Navy EOD school here at Eglin.
I walk in for a six of my favorite brew, and theres 3 SP's? Loaded for bear with 3 RD. burst lower A2's and full battle dress. One had a Strider just barely visible, cord wrapped, peekin' out below his jacket. No idea what unit, wearing black berets. I guess with everyone on high alert they don't lock up there weapons in the vehicle anymore. They were buying sub sandwiches. Mighty cool.
Iv'e lived on the edge of 51 for twenty years and thats the first show of weapons in public Iv'e ever seen. Sorry, too nervous ask what Strider he had. Especially with me standing there with a six of Heine. They're most likely heading out to patrol the range. Once about 15 years ago I was stopped by some SP's with 3 prong AR's, the real old ones, but now there totin' Striders to boot.

Cheers,

Hal:)

Close to Eglin AFB?

Most likely SP's. Our dark blue beret often looks black, especially if it's been worn awhile (aka its old), weather-worn, etc.

Glad to hear that more and more fellow Defenders are carrying Striders. Now to find the cash for my own...

You know if you wash you're beret in cold water and woolite every now and again it will stay blue, clean and smell nice;) Besides this gives you a chance to shave and re-form it:D

DOn't want to look like a pizza delevery guy now do you:eek:

Pizza delivery? Of course not!

However...I've had my current beret for 2 years. I believe it has a unique personality to it, if you will. It looks like it's been through hell and back - which it has! Rain, snow, sleet, sun, MWD's (my supervisor's dog enjoys chewing on berets if left unattended), run over a few times, you get the idea.

Woolite? Wash?? No way! Not only do I enjoy the fold in it (I'm afraid I'd lose it), I think the color (or lack there of) is part of my beret. To wash it would be to change it. Naw, my trusty "rug" has served me too well to do that to it!:D

Now Now Phil, don't get you're panties all bunched up;) ;)

Woolite and cold water really goes a long way towards making the beret sit/fit and smile:p My 1st beret lasted 11 years and was washed every 6 months wether it needed it or not :D Then it just took a little shaving and reshaping to make it better than ever. Of course this was back in the days of metal crests.

Take it from a old war horse you wont loose the fold by washing and it won't smell like a wet horse blanket anymore not to mention will end up with a better shape than before:p Besides it's blue not blue/black, do you want more people to think you are in the Army (VBG)

My current beret is almost 3 years old and I've been sadly neglecting it. Only washed it 3 times and the last washing was after somebody greased it:barf:

woolite, woolite woolite:cool:

Yes Phil, just East of Eglin, on the edge of Range 51 Test Range.
Near Bluewater Bay. They have the US Navy Ordinance Disposal School out on the Range.
There's been alot of SOS types around lately. They look like Black Berets. They drive unmarked, USAF Blue trucks, and dressed to kill. There is always alot of cross training going on as well, they could have been an STS unit. Hope you get a Strider soon.

Cheers,

Hal

Hal, one way to tell for sure is next time you see them take a good look at the crest. if the crest looks like this USAF SF then it's a AF Security Forces. You would be suprised at some of the places we end up:D :D

Will Do Shrike. The SP's that patrol the range put in some long hours on some really desolate roads in the boonies around here. When I was younger they all new me because I spent many a day dirt biking those trails, and we'd usually end up some where we didn't belong.
So I guess you guys retained your blue berets instead of the black ones. Sometimes we see the Maroon berets on USAF guy's as well. At least I think there USAF. Lots of different SF personel around here at Eglin AFB.

Cheers,

Hal

A Maroon beret on Air Force personnel means they're either Para Rescue Jumpers (aka PJ's) or a member of the Combat Control Teams.

Either way, they're AF Special Operations guys. Most are pretty squared-away individuals.
