Hey guys,
Hope this has not been compared before. I am a knife guy and a bike guy. The harley "magic" is almost undeniable however as undeniable as the magic is the fact that Japanese bikes are faster, more reliable and cheaper. (Now before you HD guys go crazy I have a V-Rod 2003, my brother has a road king and my father has a full dresser)
Now while I am typing this my month one old Strider SMF tanto is drying. I took it apart to fix the frame lock, the clip, tighten the pivot up and while I am at it clean it up. I have never had to put this type of work into a new benchmade, spyderco or kershaw etc , however, I knew about the issues with strider before I bought it.
My point is for all the faults of the strider or the HD we can't help but love them. And the more work we put into them the more our ownership grows.
Just my .02. What do you think?

Just wait till I put some ghost flames over the strider flames ...and maybe a louder exhaust!!!!!

Though I know what you mean, many Benchmades, Spyderco's and Kershaws are made in the US. To me, a knife like a strider should come tight with great fit and finish. If it doesnt well thats unnaccepatable. I drive a Suzuki...because it starts , and I dont have to deal with the quarks. I dont find that "Harley Magic" they just dont do it for me and I have found many Harley owners to be less than cordial. Now this doesnt refer to you at all but many Harley owners stick up there noses at anything but Harleys and I am sure I am not the only one to run into this.

I have striders, I like them alot but I have had ones that I was less than pleased with with issues such as verticle blade play and liner engagement. These issues were taken care of and now they are fine, but it seems like when I order one there's the possibility that its going to need to be sent back. Frankly that shouldnt happen, I dont expect to send a benchmade back or a kershaw or a spyderco and they are half the price or less. For me strider is my redheaded stepchild, I know it may have problems when it gets here but I love to beat it anyway:D

Buy A Harley
Own The Best,
Ride A Mile,
Walk The Rest

Though I do ride bikes, I've never been a big Harley fan, never bought into the hype.

I do own a few Striders though, I guess I didn't have the same resistance to their "hype".

I until recently had a Sportster custom. There was really nothing out there that satisfied me more (at that price) or else I would have gotten other thing. Had it all, power, rumble, looks, comfort and believe or not, reliability. Did I mentioned that chicks were not included but as if they were :D :D :D .

robertmeagar does not need help in the chic dept! That being said...where do I get some ghost flames for my Striders?

LaBella,
The Harley dealer will gladly charge you $45.00 for some $3.00 stickers that look like ghost flame!!

I really don't understand paying $300.00 + for a knife, then having to put "work" into it. Not when there are many other knives in that price range that have better workmanship. For example, I just bought a William Henry Titan Quest. It truly is one of the best knives I've ever owned!

Its the work that you put into that creates the connection with the knife. Somebody on here a while back talked about how he could not love the Manix because it was boring. It cut everything everyway all the time. No skill involved in the ownership or use of the knife. Now don't get me wrong I love my BM and Spyderco's it's just that I understand putting work into a knife the way some guys put work into a bike and they feel good about it.

Some people buy appliances and want no effort on their part to maintain them.

Some people buy character and want the effort on their part to maintain them.

I'll stick to the side that needs TLC and delivers satisfaction rather than own souless commodity merchandise. Appliances llike that are for the house. I drive a Jeep - and it doesn't leak oil! My Strider SnG came perfect - so nyaah.

I am so blessed!

All above points are valid.

Same thing with cars. Some people still love to buy those tempermental and expensive european cars because they like the appeal rather than a boring but reliable Japanese product.

Striders are more crafty/collector pieces for "pride ownership" rather than practicality. You want practical and maintainance free, then go with Spyderco ( I have owned several and never a problem). My very first Strider, an SnG, developed a seriously loose pivot which required less than 3 minutes to tighten. Still, this shouldn't happen if customer feedback is important to a company so they can work out this flaw. Especially at the price.

What is really interesting, is that I have seen several comments from the Strider people about wanting you to use and abuse their knives, but then they come out with these amazingly beautiful custom knives costing more than $600 and expect you not to baby them.

I own and have ridden HD's for years. Don't own and probably will never own a Strider. Don't see a valid comparison myself but that don't mean there ain't one. keepem sharp
