Strider Broke!

Well, It happened...about two weeks ago I ranted and raved about the new Strider and how my only concern was that the clip was not screwed into the liner also, instead of just the brass inserts.

Well....My clip seemed to be a bit loose so I took my tork set out to tighten it up a bit. And when I did it just started to get snug when I got that horrible sensation when it all of a sudden the screw starts to spin around very easy

Yup....The brass got stripped out! Now keep in mind I did not "gorilla" it in there...I used my bit adaptor from my gerber tool and only used finger strengh just so this kind of thing wouldnt happen. I was surprised also to see that the screws only hold on by only 3-4 threads

This is one knife I thought would last forever without this kind of problem, after all "Failure is not an option" for this knife.

In the future I will ONLY buy a knife with the clip screwed into the liner for a more succure hold...Ive had this kind of thing happen to me way to much from many different knives that Im just done with them.

I do have one question about the Strider clip. Where can I send it to have it modified so I can have the liner drilled and tapped? I believe if this were to be done, this would be the one knife I dont think would fail then.

Other than the clip, this is still a great knife!

Keith,

Sorry to hear about the failure.
I am checking with engineering to see if the liner can be threaded and longer screws used. I'll keep you posted.

Sincerely,

Thanks Joe!

If they can do it, Id be more than happy to pay for the upgrade.

If that was to be done I think the Strider would be by far the toughest folder out there. And might even be cheaper for you guys to attach the clip this way instead of the inserts...?

Thanks Again for looking into this.

Kdarmy,
Hey I'm sorry. I've ranted about this myself.

Keith,

Don't lose any faith in the knife. Seems like everything in this world needs a little "tweaking" now and then. I'm sure it's a great, heavy duty knife. I would just send it to Joe or the right person at Buck. They can modify it for you, I'm sure. Let 'em do it. Also, I bet they won't charge you. They shouldn't, you're doing them a favor by helping refine an already excellent product.

Keith,
I found out that we have a fix for the knife. The problem was not so much that the threaded fasteners were brass, it was that the screws did not get enough purchase on the threads. (translation-they did not go in far enough) If you send yours in to my attention, i will see that it gets fixed and back to you. And Pete is correct, it will not cost you anything.

Hummmmm just ordered one from cheaper than dirt and hopefully the clip will be tight right from the get go, if not I'll leave it alone for now. Would hate for the clip screws to get striped out while over in the UAE. I'm planning on abusing the crap out of this knife as it's going to be my utility folder over in the sandbox.

Joe,

Thanks for looking into this for me and for the offer to fix it. But what I really want to do is to drill and tap the liner, so I think I'll look into that route first.

If the screws are to short, does that mean they all are too short or just some of them that left the shop?

I'll be at the show next weekend and hope to run into you there.

Kindest Regards,

Keith,

They are all the same length. Our engineers felt that they should hold up under normal abuse at the current length. We have not had too many strip out, yours is the only one i have heard of, but they felt it was better to be safe than sorry so they lengthened the screws. The knife is desinged for heavy duty use so anything like this that we can do to beef it up...

If the new screws come in by tomorrow, 10/25, i will grab a few and bring them to the show.

Take care,

Thanks Joe!

Hope you get them before the show and I'll try em out. I got mine to work with some loc-tite, but its not holding on by much.

And as always, VERY impressed by your customer service. Here on the forums and by calling direct to Buck Knives.
