Several years ago I impulse bought a Strider SMF. It looked authentic as I compared it to the Strider SnG that I was carrying, so I bit the bullet and bought it for what I thought was a really good price. Well, as many of my impulse buys go it ended up in the safe and was forgotten.

Fast forward a couple years and I have been cleaning out my safe. I find the long lost Strider and begin to research it a bit. It had a finish I had never seen before and didn’t have the Hinderer lock nut. In addition to that it looked like the finish on the top of the blade was wearing/flaking and darkening. With those two items in mind I thought that maybe it was too good a deal when I bought it and began to think that I had been taken.

I started to do a little more research on how to identify authentic/fake Striders. Well, I went through list of what makes a Strider authentic and I “think” I have the real deal. As I investigated though, I realized that I might have the SMF CuBe, which has the non-magnetic copper beryllium blade. There are still a couple things that bother me though:

1)Stamping – there is a barely visible Strider logo. The Strider name is double stamped just below the logo. Any of the Striders I have seen have the name stamped on the opposite side of the blade as the logo.
2)Lock bar stabilizer– The stabilizer nut is not an stamped as a Hinderer nut. I’m pretty sure that all Strider folders don’t have Hinderer stabilizers but the copper beryllium version I think usually has it.

So, can anybody help me verify that I have an authentic SMF CuBe here?

If you look close you can see the top portion of the blade you can see the "flaking"

Looks legit to me. That is a very rare knife. I'm peanut butter and jealous.
Use caution when sharpening CuBe. The dust is toxic.

The double-stamp would worry me; it shouldn't ever pass QC. But it may be like a coin and, if authentic, make that one valuable piece too.

Our air, our food, our water....and now our knives.

Yeah, that is something that makes me wonder as well. I put a magnet to the blade and it appears to be non-magnetic. One of the other things I checked is the knurling on the nuts of the handle. That checked out too, as I have read that fakes usually don't have the knurling and just fall out.

QC??? We're talking about strider here, right? Didn't think they had a QC department. Don't they just slap together whatever they have and send it out the door? :D

They're not going to reject and waste a CuBe blade just because of a messy stamp. I don't really think it's that big of a deal. Without comparing it to the real thing, who knows, but from the pics I'd say it's the real deal. If Kevin John is going to knock off a strider he's not going to try and fake a rare CuBe variant.
Email Strider Knives and see if they can confirm it.

I'm pretty positive thats legit. It has all the tell tale signs of a real Strider and none of the signs of a fake. Also if you're sure its a non magnetic blade that basically seals the deal, I've never heard of a faked CuBe with anything other than a painted blade. That particular one was actually a real strider, but some jerk had spray painted it and tried to pass it off as a cube smf.

I'd also like to say thanks to the fellow who said that the double stamp would never pass Strider QC, coffee came out my nose at that one. I've had 3 striders now and loved em all, but two have had double stamps :D

Oh and OP don't cut up food with that thing either. :barf:

Wanted to add that plenty of the LBSs are not stamped "Hinderer" my current SnG CC isn't and one of the Legos that passed through me wasn't either.

Edit: Keep walking away and thinking of more stuff on this. The flaking bit is probably oxidation from the metal. They were originally clear coated and that probably wore off on the spine there allowing the CuBe to oxidize causing more flaking.

Thanks Eric,

I'm feeling more and more confident that it is genuine. I am going to email Strider this weekend though. I'll keep you guys posted.

There's at least one of these in every thread....

Back on topic, that's the real deal, and I am a little jealous.
Enjoy, that is a very rare and excellent knife.
