Strider help...

Ok. So I've decided that I want a Strider. I'd sorta like the Seal 2001, but it's about $700, there don't seem to be any left, and I think I like the tip on a BT better anyway.

SO. My question is this: am I correct in thinking that Striders are pretty much the best, toughest knife out there? I know there are LOADS of other great knives, but when it really comes down to it, Striders are at the top, right?

I know there is lots of opinion on this, and I'm not trying to start a battle, just want to assure myself before purchase.

Educate me on Striders!

Thanks
Strati

Best and Toughest don't mean anything. If you want a very tough knife, buy a Strider and don't worry. From ALL reports I have read, Striders are tough enough to handle anythign you should do with a knife, and many things you shouldn't do. Don't worry, just send in your money.

Strider does make high quality knives with some cool styles; they have a loyal following.

For abuse-enduring toughness and reliability Busse Combat knives also have a great reputation and a warranty that is akin to don't ask, don't tell other than intentional damage. I have used many of their knives extensively and can vouch for their performance first hand.

Yup.., definitely a couple of companies that make a tough knife.., and back it up!

Dr.,
I would have to agree with Nimrod. No doubt Strider make a very good quality product. Their heat treater is second to none! and they make a great product. However, for $700 you could get set up with a Busse BM-E and pocket the other $350, or choose a different model to your liking. I have been very pleased with my BM-E as have many others around the forums. There are few knives that can withstand constant and intentional abuse. Busses can! If you aren't satisifed with you purchase, then Jerry will bend over backwards to make things right. Plus, I hear Busse's are now available in about 3 weeks from the factory. Just something to think about...buy what you like the best.
Take care,
Luke

As has been said, Strider makes a great knife. They are tough. However, toughest is highly arguable.

For my money, I'd go with Busse Combat for the toughest knives available. Here are some performance videos Busse has made on their knives:

I have yet to see these tests replicated by any other company.

The best knife is different for different people. What is best for the fisherman may be a lot different than a hunter.

My advice...buy a lot of different knives. Strider, Busse, Reeves, Microtech........;)

This was the best for me today. Hmmm...what shall I carry tomorrow? :D

I was in the same pinch as you.

I looked up Tops, Busse, Strider, Lightfoot, Jerry Hossom, Snody, Laci Szabo and a few others.

I managed to make a top three list:

  • Busse
  • Hossom
  • Strider

I decided to buy a Strider first, then I´ll order me a J. Hossom Retribution or maybe ask him to make a knife that I´ve drawn. Then, maybe, I´ll get me a Busse-Flying-Shark-Mojo whatever they are called (where does he get all those weird names).

The reason behind me choosing a Strider first is that the model I chose has a sharper point and a nice custom feature that I was prepared to pay extra for. The price for the Strider was less than I would have to pay for a true Busse custom (not their regular models found on their site). It seems from all the reviews I´ve read that the Busse INFI steel and Striders Paul-Bros cryo heat treat comes very close to each other performance-wise. It´s more a matter of taste and price. I decided to go for the Strider based on performance/dollar.

The Hossom will probably be a little more expensive than the Strider but equal to the Busse. The Hossom will probably be of my own design so that tilted the scale in favor of a Hossom custom knife. It will be cool to use it and tell people who asks where I got it "Well, I designed this and a talented American custom knife maker called Jerry Hossom made it for me. It´s perfect for my needs."

The Busse will be bought when I have paid the first two ;)

Yes yes,

The title for *THE* toughest knives is a very conjectural mix up of:

Himalayan Imports (HI) Khukuris: *THE* greatest choppers on the planet, *PERIOD*. A complete, *AB-SO-DAMN-LUTELY*, no Bull$**** guarantee against *ANY* and *ALL* damage unintentional or not...

Swamp Rat: Their insanely well heat-treated 52100 High-Carbon Tool Steel is eye-poppingly tough, hard and holds an incredible edge. To back it all up, they're a Busse-spinoff, with the same tolerace to failure, and a complete, personalized guarantee to boot...

Strider: Great heat treatment, incredible steel, numerous great responses. Similarly, has a complete guarantee.

Busse: I'd say the same as Strider, with the added feature of their "Secret-composition" INFI...

I think that's about it...
