After recently getting my JKing PFK in 3V, I think I've found my favorite steel. I'm sure it'll change in a couple of months ;) but until then, I'm looking for a folder in 3V.

I've seen Striders in 3V and wonder what experience folks have with their HT.

Also, who else makes folders in 3v?

Thanks All!

I have a couple of 3V SMFs but haven't really put them through their paces yet. But I do have some other Striders that I have used quite a bit, and they do an excellent job with their HT. I'm sure their 3V is no different.

I am actually trying to hunt a strider smf 3v down lol... spyderco tuff in 3v comes out first quarter 2012

Did you check out the video that Monkey Edge posted with the Strider DB in 3V? It should be posted on their website.

I have the DB-L in 3V but haven't had the chance to abuse it yet.

I'm not sure who else is using 3V right now in production knives - I don't see a lot of it.

These forums are costing me money...but at least I'm learning a lot!

I think I have answered my own question. I recently obtained a Strider SMF in 3V (thank you forumites!) and compared it with my Justin King PFK (also in 3V). I haven't done a lot of toughness testing, nor do I intend to since 3V toughness testing will likely require nearly breaking the blades, but from normal use and basic cutting, here is what I have found:

- I still love 3V. I can literally get this steel hair whittling sharp without a lot of trouble (as compared to some of my other folder steels)
- The Justin King HT from Peters (Rockwell 59-60) is a superior HT than the Strider for Edge Retention. The JKing edge retention is SIGNIFICANTLY better in initial sharpness. The Strider may be tougher...but again I'm not willing to test $240 and a $550 knives to the limit of destruction. I'm sure both are plenty tough.
- Chipping - also a measure of toughness, I have not had any chipping issues with either steel and that includes occasionally running over/through some staples in box cutting.
- Corrosion - Even though CPM3V is not a stainless, I have not had any corrosion/staining on my blades even though I regularly expose the steels to moisture. I clean the blades after use and occasionally oil them with mineral oil. That being said, I live in a fairly arid area with minimal humidity.

For background, I don't use my knives terribly hard...just some box cutting, light trail duty and lots of sharpness testing on TP, hair (for whittling of course), telephone book paper, etc. Because of you forumites (I blame you all ;)), I have become a steel junkie and my blades include an S90V Millie, BM 581 in M390, BM 805 TSEK in M390, a Combative Edge M1 in N690 and a BM 890 in 154 CM ( However, I'm not sure how much pocket time those other blades will see now except for the M1 which I love...). I find S90V difficult to nearly impossible to get hair whittling sharp. I can get M390 nearly hair whittling sharp with some patience and time. N690 and 154 CM will get hair nearly whittling sharp but will lose that edge quicker and not as tough as 3V IME.

I'm sure some of you will say you can get those other steels as sharp as 3V, but I cannot. Maybe I'm doing something wrong on my Lansky.

Now, I wonder how the Fehrman HT of CPM3V will compare.....
