Strider Knives Improved?

Hello all. I recently read a review of a Strider PT and he mentioned past issues and revisions of the PT model, which is the model I'm interested in. He also went on to say that the new pt he purchased has the best f&f of all the knives he owns. He also showed pictures which were of his pt and I must say it was impressive. Is this level of f&f plus qc the norm now? If yes I'm buying one.

You're going to go off ONE review? Up to you.

I wanted one but every one I played with had wobble issue with the blade. Every one.

I will visit another high end cutlery this year and will ask to handle a new model of strider and examine for myself.

Well no not one review. I'm waiting to see what your guy's experience is. Was the wobble experience recent?

It was roughly 6 or 7 months ago.

I've heard people say not all of them have issues, some are rock solid like Chris reeve knives. If I found one, I would of purchased already.

Guy at store did not want to open every box to find a decent strider, so he lost a sale.

I have a sng with the new lock up. After a good breakin period, I can thumb or finger flick it open easily. Rock solid lock up no play at all. Mine is just a plain jane, I bought second hand in mint condition.

The PT's still have issues. Bought a custom all Ti PT about 7 months ago, and while the knife was beautiful, it had the worse lock rock of any knife I have owned in 20+ years. My "newer" SnG's have been excellent though.

The new PT CC is my most carried knife these days...

Here is my SnG, Strider makes great knives...

I had no problems with my PT at all, it was great. But I was looking to buy an SNG this weekend and decided not to because it didn't pass my inspection. I am a little picky but there was a considerable amount of blade play. They had a few other SNG's but I decided to go with a Troodon instead.

I would only buy one I can handle prior to or possibly from a reputable member of this forum that way you know what you are getting. I am fortunate to have a dealer near by!

I like the look of Striders. And the thick blades , materials used and overall designs all make me want one.

But the fact that I keep hearing that they have blade play issues keeps me away. IMO for $400 they should ALL be rock solid. Not just a few here and there.

I've had quite a few Striders, and one or two had some lock-rock. They were also "old."
My PT's have been fine; my SJ75's are more to my liking, as a bit more heavy-duty and still very easy to carry. The SJ75 has the same useable (sharp) blade length as the larger Sng, IIRC, about 2.8 inches, but a much different knife.
I like Striders. Extraordinary customer service. Very heavy-duty capable knives.
I am "surprised" when I run across one with blade-play or lock-rock. Most blade-play is a matter of adjustment of the pivot, although lock-rock is more serious... However, rare in my book.

I'd say since the new lock face it seems there f&f has been improved significantly. I recently purchased an SnG from BladeHQ and looked at about 6. All were rock solid and it came down to eeny meeny mieny mo. Fantastic knives!

Strider has the best warranty in the business. It doesnt matter if you develope lock rock or snap the blade in half, theyll fix it for you. Even though they dont have Reeve's near spotless record with qc and longterm usage reports, their warranty should give you much confidence in their products

I dont play the Strider lottery.
Lock rock and blade play are pet peeve's for most of us, especially on $400 knives.
I know Strider would probably "fix" it for me, but I like my knives to arrive issue free.
Many reviews also claim their "new gen" striders were solid when purchased and developed issues after a month of use.
Strider may have improved their QC but there are too many other knives in that price range that don't have such potential for flaws.

IF you are somewhat handy and have the proper tools to dissasemble Striders many of the centering, blade play, minor lock rock issues can be fixed! I have owned and sharpened for clients many striders(I currently own 5). Each one has its own sweet spot. Some come amazingly perfect from the factory (my new SMF S110V from true north knives for example) or you can get one on the secondary market or even from a retailer that needs minor adjusting.

I have never seen lock rock issues from brand new striders from retailers. Occasionally there may be blade play but it can be adjusted by disassembling, cleaning, and adjusting the pivot and scale screws. There is also a trick to help with centering that hinderer and curtiss have posted over on USN---this also works with Striders.

One last thing, Striders do have a breaking in period. Sometimes the pivot will be a little tight when you find the sweet spot with centering, zero blade play, etc but opening and closing will break it in so its nice and smooth. Finally, with new ones put some graphite on the blade tang to help keep the lock bar from being sticky until they break in. just my .02

People seem to swear by their warranty, but three out of the four SNGs I've handled had lock rock so even if Mick Strider wasn't the dishonorable dirtbag he is I still wouldn't trust them.

That said, I've handled a half dozen PTs and they've all been fine, so maybe it's a model to model thing.

I don't understand why people consider side to side blade play to a deal breaker of an issue. It's a simple matter of tightening the pivot screw. Yes a knife at that price point should come perfect from the factory, but I've had dozens of other knives, from high end manufactures, require tweaking when they were new as well. The only annoying thing is the proprietary pivot screw. I made my own tool to adjust mine. Once it was tightened up all the bladeplay was gone. Yes, it was a little stiffer after that. But it soon broke in, and now my SNG is one the smoothest knives I own. Light lockrock would come and go. Lately it's been perfect. Overall my Strider is in my top 5. Absolutely love it!

As for all the drama surrounding Mick.... I don't care. I judge Strider by the knife I have in my hands, not by any internet gossip that has nothing to do with me. He may be a jackoff, I don't know and I don't care. I have no intention or urge to ever meet him. I'm indifferent to the whole thing.
