strider lockup in question

I don't know if this question has already been adressed, but i must know the answer. Does the strider sng lock up tight or do they all have a bit of lateral blade play when opened. Some say yes they have a little play and others say they don't. Someone has to be lying. If you own a sng or smf, let me know if they lock down tight or not.....and please be honest, lol. Does the thumbstud on your sng's make contact with both sides, or just the titatnium side when opened??? Does the thumbstud make contact with the g-10 when locked open, or just float right above the g-10 handle??? I'm curious to know this because I have heard a lot of different answers. Thanks

I have a PT and am on my second SnG....My current SnG was bought brand new, and has zero blade play and the lockup is perfect. However, when closed, the blade is slightly offcenter...non issue for me as the action is butter smooth, and the blade isn't contacting the scales. My first SnG was gotten used, in trade, and had some play..but that was easily remedied by adjusting the pivot tension.
The thumbstud only makes contact on the Ti side, and there is a very slight gap between the stud and the G10.

thanks dave. I've seen a lot of sng's at gun/knife shows and very few have a well centered blade. It's hard for me to even fathom the idea of an off centered blade when company's pride themselves on their wicked knife-making skills. Do you know if all sng's only make contact with the ti side though? slice and dice baby

All the Striders I have ever owned, had a very small amount of side to side. I'm no expert, but have had maybe 10 of them from SNGs to a custum SMF to a RC. All had the same wiggle.

People have different standards

My current Sng locks up nice and tight and the thumb stud makes contact with the ti side and not the G10, I have seen a few that do make contact with the g10 just not mine.

thanks for the link 3guardsmen. Lots of questions answered now. I like how strider justifies the off centered blades with geometric resolutions. I'll take the flawless and smooth opening of a blade rather than the look of perfection anyday. I feel much better now and man do i love the sng design.

I've got three striders a gb sng smf i love all three none of them have centered blades the gb is like butter opening the sng has a hard time opening and the smf has a harder time opening i'm waiting for a tool to adjust hope that helps i never have a hard time opening my busse's

I've only had one centered blade when closed in a Strider and I've owned three SnGs and two PT models before selling or trading all of them off. One of the SnG models developed blade play up and down after using it about eight months I guess. It was just the spring in the lock that was not enough to continue inward to continue self correcting from wear so once the lock reached just shy of half way across the contact on the blade I noticed that it got just a tiny bit of movement in the blade vertically. I took it apart and had it fixed up in no time by springing the lock a bit more and that was the last time I had to mess with it.

I've got an older DDC SMF, a production SMF, a 15th anniversary AR, and recently sold an SNG. All locked up solid and have no blade play at all. They feel as solid as a beefy fixed blade knife.
There's been many discussions on this and other forums about Strider quality control or lack there of. My experience has been 100% positive. Smooth operation, perfectly centered blades, no visible imperfections.
I haven't had to use it, but I've heard the Strider customer service is very good.

I have a SMF and it locks up tight, no vertical or horizontal play. The stop pin only contacts that titanium side.

Same here. My experience is with 2 sng's and one smf, and all 3 locked up solid! Like trying really, really hard to wiggle the blade and there was none at all.

On all 3 the studs only contacted the ti side.

Also on all 3 the blade was ever so slightly off center, just a tad closer to the G10 side but no where near rubbing the scales.

All mine were purchased new and recently made, if that matters.

Very well done knives for the hard use crowd, imo.

the stop pin should only be hitting the ti scale, and should ride above the g10 scale.

What he said. And the FAQ said.

My SMF locks up solid with no blade play in any direction. One of my favorite knives.

my sng locks up solid. my smf is different. if I want a tight lock up I have to tighten the pivot screw down.

Got 2 sng, zero blade play, i have the pivot tightened up tight but still smooth, and almost flickable lol,but tight get a spanner tool you will need it..........

The Punisher makes a great point. The spanner tool does keep from scratching and dinging the pivot barrel all up. I have used a mini Bear Jaw multi tool which is one of those very small needle nose key ring tools that I carry all the time. I've found that to be quite handy for a lot of things actually including functioning as a very nice tweezer but it has managed to fit and turn the pivot of not just the Striders but other knives made in a similar way in the pivot just fine but you do have to be very careful not to let the two jaws for the pliers slip off and scratch things up. It does work in a pinch though if you are careful with a good steady hand.

My SnG (purchased new) locks up solid, even after the break in period. No side to side or up and down at all.

New Strider purchases, solid as a rock. Users bought off this and other forums, some had varying degrees of left to right blade play that wasn't solved wth a good take down and cleaning. None have ever had up and down blade play, zero!
