Made a impulse buy and picked up a new Strider PAB in S30V from monkeyedge -my first strider knife for the record. What got my attention was the blade shape, overall look and the quality generally associated with strider's - but now that it is in my possession I am not sure about its functionality....
Feel free to correct me if i am wrong but s30v is well known and sought after for folders (edge retention/corrosion resistance etc) but after looking at it from what I gather it is not that desirable in larger fixed blades because its brittle and can chip if attempting heavier duty tasks. So for all of you that know more about this stuff than I .......all things considered (striders heat treat, blade shape, steel composition) will it stand up to camp/survival type tasks. Feel free to compare it to others but I am not looking for alternatives as I do have other knives that could stand in its place. thanks

I prefer non-stainless steels for my fixed blades but that does not mean S30V is a bad steel for the tasks you intend to use that knife for. And it is not that brittle, just less tough than tool steels like 3V or D2.
Shane Sibert uses S30V on its big blades and no-one ever complained.

The PAB looks like a great knife.
I almost did an impulse buy myself.

Striders heat treat on S30V is the best I’ve ever seen.

I tested similar knives in (Fehrman ) 3V, INFI, and (Strider) S30V a while back.

The Strider held its own against the other two. I had no chipping or breakage issues at all. It even survived a vicious tip stab into some very hard concrete. (As did the other two)

Let us know how your PAB works out for you.

Thanks for the input...that makes me feel a bit more comfortable. The next opportunity I have I will take it outside and put it through its paces then post some results.

I just Googled it due to the lack of pictures. What do you intend to do with it? What could be so bad that you are now worried?

No worries, just wanted some opinions on what folks thought the limitations of this particular s30v blade would be. To answer your other question I can see myself having it on my hip out in the bush with me doing whatever might need to be done; limbing, a bit of chopping maybe, clearing brush....and sorry for not having pics, haven't looked at how to do that yet. Cheers!
