Looking to buy a strider folder. don't know what steel to pick. I know a little about cpm s110v. But nothing about pd-1. I have a knife in CTS-XHP. And I really love that steel. Can anyone help me out.

I have both steels from Strider. Can't go wrong with either! If you like fine edges, pick PD1. I find that out takes a finer edge than S110V, and takes it easily.

If you get S110V, it'll keep a working edge forever, but loses that fine edge quickly. It's also harder to get that fine edge back.

I'm not saying S110V can't take a fine edge. I'm saying it takes me much more effort to get that fine edge.

Good luck!

If you have any experience with CPM Cruwear ( Spyderco millie) you should find PD-1 fairly similar sort of like with ATS 34 and 154cm. Same composition mostly but the difference would be in whatever heat treat was used, the blade grinds and thickness, etc. The PD-1 is about 3v or S30V wear resistance but much tougher than S110V which has much better wear resistance than anything short of 10V. PD-1 should have better edge stability and lateral strength. S110V will have better corrosion resistance though with the coating Strider uses PD-1 shouldn't be too bad.

PD-1 for harder use, S110V for use in corrosive environments or things like cutting rope where the greater carbide fraction comes into play. My opinion anyway.

Not so sure about PD-1 as far as real use goes, I do have a CPM Cru-Wear Military, but haven't done anything with it yet.

CPM S110V, I have a lot of experience with that steel and I use it everyday in kitchen in a custom fixed blade. It will take a very fine edge as it is pretty fine grained and clean, but with the wear resistance it will take most people more time to sharpen than steels like S30V. I find ceramic works excellent touching up S110V back to a screaming sharp edge in seconds, I keep my knives I use in the kitchen very sharp, usually sharp enough to drop through (Cut) a paper towel length wise without tearing, and that's not a polished edge either. Try it if you don't think that's sharp...... And that's off a Spyderco Professional Medium File (Ceramic), same as the Medium Sharpmaker rod for the most part.

My vote would go for PD-1 simply because Strider's S110 doesn't come in a flat ground blade that I've seen. I had a FFG PD-1 SnG and I liked it a lot. If they made a FFG in S110, it would be my choice.
