I am looking at a lot of price ranges for a new folder, and have decided that if I spend more that $400 I am getting a Strider.
I know what model, color of G-10, and back side finish I want. As far as steels I am not so sure.
The 2 choices for Strider are S35-VN and CPM-154. I have always been a S30/35 guy because it holds an edge reasonably long and is not prone to rust. The thing is, I have been hearing that CPM-154 is some type of super steel and far different than typical 154cm.
Is this true of CPM-154, or is it just slightly better 154cm?

It is 154CM using the CPM procces. If I was going to get a Strider if would be in CPM 154 as I generally put ease of sharpening ahead of edge holding but thats just me.

I dont have anything in cpm 154 but I think Ankerson likes it and Ive found his rankings and thoughts about various steels to be very accurate, unbiased and helpful. If he says that cpm 154 is significantly superior to 154cm, Id take him at his word. Ive heard some argue that cpm 154 it has the same properties as 154cm but its more forgiving therefore easier for a maker to get excellent results but that a master can get the same results with 154cm. Most people who's opinions I trust seem to think its almost like a different steel though.

Reson for edit - misread 2nd post

Mick, Strider, says other is no "measurable" difference between any of the steels he uses in production models. The end users seem to prefer cpm154cm. I've had all of the steels in production models and can't tell a difference under light to moderate use. I'm not really a "hard" user.

I will say that I chopped down a stalk of bamboo with my s30v tanto and it didn't even dull the blade. I cut the bamboo over Thanksgiving and have used the knife exclusively. Yesterday it sliced right through a water bottle I wanted to cut the top off of.
