Strider SMF, gave it a second chance.

I'll preface this by saying the strider I owned previously was sold quickly. It had horrible fit and finish for a 50 dollar knife, nevermind a 500 dollar knife. I tried to contact customer service and was left hanging. I didn't have the patience so I sold it at a loss. I decided to pick up another SMF just for the hell of it to see if maybe I just got a lemon before.

The knife arrived today, and I am actually impressed. 400+ dollar value? Probably not, but I don't think any folding knife is really "worth" that if you consider what they actually do. But I had the $$ so I wanted to treat myself.

Ergos - There isn't a knife that fits my hand like the SMF. It feels, in a word, perfect. In every single grip, the knife just feels right.

Blade - Thick s30v = a very good working blade. You don't realize how thick the knife is until you really hold it in your hand. The knife grind was very even and although I wouldn't shave my face with it, it easily shaves arm hair and makes confetti out of paper.

Handle - Green g10, grippy, but not to the point of being painfully annoying if I used it for some time. The flamed titanium is a nice touch, and I really love the pocket clip.

Lock - The frame lock opens with authority with a loud clack, there is absolutely zero blade play and the lock is not overly tough to disengage.

The knife opens smoothly out of the box, although not as smooth as a CRK blade, but when you buy a Strider you're not expecting one. It's like a Mac Truck compared to a Bentley, two separate, very nice, very expensive vehicles with different uses in mind.

The blade is perfectly centered, however there are obvious tooling marks in spots, and other imperfections. I really don't care, I expected it. Overall I'm very happy with it. I'll buy an Umnumzaan next, but for now, this strider is a keeper.

Great choice. I love my SMF and you are spot on with your comparison to the CRK Zaan.
Ps nice pics as well! :)

you can get a ZT or DPX hest for half the price and same build quality

Very nice - there's something about the way a SmF feels in the hand.

I see we were somewhat convincing - I saw your thread in "General" as you were going through the justification process.

I really like and enjoy mine - I have the gunenr grips and digicam blade.

Nice Photos Mike. :D

Looks like you really have that D5000 down now and are using a light box. :)

Mike, 100% agree!!! My SMF is the perfect folder. I like it alot better than CR folders. The CR's are nice but I like the roughouse ability with the Striders, just MHO. CR's are more like a dress knife.

Oh, Great Pics as usual Bro!!!

Man, I need to get better with taking pics. I turn off my flash. Stick them in my gun case and start shooting. Lol!

Yes, very nice photos.

It is good to hear that you are having a better experience this time 'round.

I think it will be interesting to see how you feel about the Umnumzaan. People often characterize these knives similarly (and they are in some regards) but they have a VERY different ergonomics.

I've long wanted to try this knife out but the blade to handle ratio bothers me. I just feel its somehow wrong to have a 9 inch knife with a 3 inch cutting edge.

It also concerns me that the QC seems very patchy.

I think the way to manage the second concern is to buy from a dealer who can give you a hands-on check on the knife they're going ship you. It isn't like there's a lot of price competition with these knives...

No I can't. Also, then I wouldn't own a strider. That's the cool thing about money, I get to buy what I want.

I'm not knocking ZTs, I love mine, but the new hinderer model doesn't do it for me and the 300/200 series are recurves. I sold my 300s and gave my 200 to my fiancee. As for the hest, i'd rather not even get into that.

After a day in my pocket, I'm really liking it. The edge is obtuse which I expected, when it comes time to sharpen it I will thin it a tiny bit, but not all that much. It still shocks me how light this knife is, and although thick, it carries very well. Anyone who call striders bricks have never carried an 0300.

its ok... thats why there are so many types/brands of knives theres one for everyone :)

It will be a little while, I usually buy a knife, then a gun, then a knife etc but lately its been "gun gun gun" with no break in between. I'm thinking the Umnumzaan will suit me better than a sebenza though.

Love that FA in your avatar pic...

Decided it needed a little thinning down at the edge and some polish so I busted out the DMTs and strops.
