My next knife is picked out, SMF DGG. I'm still not sure on the grind though.. I've read quite a bit, but the views seem to be split. Se say ffg is a better slicer, some say the 3/4 is. Some say 3/4 is a stronger blade and some say ffg.

I will be using the blade mostly on duty as a police officer, but will edc it too I'm sure. I live in the city, so not a ton of tree chopping or crazy wilderness activity. Let's hear your vote and why! Pictures are always appreciated :D

The way I understand it, FFG is the better performer overall when it comes to cutting; but if you may need to do some prying/scraping, go with the 3/4. You are correct that views are split: that's probably because most people are very happy with what they ended up with--odds are you will be very happy with whichever you choose as well.

The 3/4 ground striders are substantially thinner behind the edge than the FFG, but the sudden ramp up in thickness at the terminus of the hollow grind means that anything but shallow cuts it's going to just split open or tear. The FFG doesn't have this issue but it isn't exactly a great cutter either. I prefer the 3/4 grind aesthetically, and the tip is a bit thicker. Honestly you're just trading one sort of negative for another.

Source: own/have owned both grinds on an SNG.

Have both and I would definitely pick 3/4 over ffg.

3/4 ground much thinner behind the edge. You can sharpen pencil easily with 3/4 but I would be little tricky with FFG. 3/4 also look much better though.

I prefer the look of the 3/4 grind, and in my regular use don't see much of a difference between the two.

I'm a firefighter and I rotate a FFG Lego SMF on duty. I like it better aesthetically and it cuts great for my needs. They are super tough knives and I think it will work well for you.

For comparison,

Either one will work fine, it's just a matter of looks

I own both. The FFG might slice a little better but otherwise they will both do the job. Honestly, pick the one you like the best and you will be happy with it.

Thanks for all the feedback! I traded into a 3/4 s30v stonewashed blade. I'll give it a run and see how I like it!

Full flat grind times 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

That stupid 3/4 grind looks ugly and above all is useless compared to the FFG.

Dang, just finding my posts and peeling in my Cheerios...

Unrelated question, do some dgg's have a black finish? I've seen some that look silver with a silver clip and some that look black with black clip

The FFG blade is my preferred folding knife blade. I've had both ( just got rid of my last 3/4th grind in Z wear) but to me the nightmare grind looks like a mistake that was given to someone else ( or waited until the grinder sobered up) to finish. It's even below a singls bevel , or "chisel" grind on my usefulness scale. When I look at the prices of the customs the NG shows up on I laugh. I'd guess in truth it did begin as a slip on the grinder.

I had one Strider ( Dwyer) custom and bought it to try the Rex 20 ( M62) steel and felt it was a bit costly but I've yet to see any other knifemaker use Rex 20. It was fairly conventional though with no strangeness other than the rare steel. IMO, the last few SNG's ( plus one SMF) have actually exceeded even the custom in QC. The new ones I've had have been very nice. Sharp, no lock rock, aligned, etc.
