Hello, I have a new Strider SMF and I find it almost impossible to open with the thumb studs. Has anyone had any experience with these? I have a RCC Strider and have no problem at all with it. The SMF has a smooth action when using the thumb hole to open with but the thumb studs do not want to give. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just took my new SMF (2 weeks old) out of my back pocket and tried for the first time to open it with the blade stops. You are correct, it is very hard as the stops are too close to the pivot to get any leverage. I think the "studs" are only for blade stops. I always use the hole...

on an sng i had, i found pushing up toward the top of the scale, rather than pushing out away from the scale, helped.

I believe Stu is absolutely correct here. If you look at the distance from the pivot center to the blade stop studs vs. the distance from the pivot center to the thumb hole it shows that the hole will give you close to twice the leverage as the studs. I do not believe that those studs were designed or intended to be used as an opening device but strictly as a structural lock for the blade to be pushed by the frame lock into the frame via those studs. It may be easier to use them as openers on the smaller Striders but with the SMF's size they will be very difficult to use for that purpose because you need more leverage to open the larger blade. They are not there for that purpose, that is what the hole is for.

The studs:
- Control lock-up 'timing' in association with the length of the liner lock leaf.
- Serve as vertical blade 'stops' when they butt up against the steel liners.
- Control blade left/right alignment.

Blade wobble or misalignment is repaired by replacing one or both of the studs with a larger or smaller diameter stud.

My SMF was returned to Strider for minor left-right wobble and misalignment. Repair required replacement of one of the studs with a slightly larger-diameter stud, with a little note from Mick Strider explaining the repair.

Hope this helps!

Quick side bar ...if you don't mind me hijacking your thread. Related to the SMF .. does your entire screw/bolt spin as you open and close your knife? If I open and close my knife forty times the "axle" will move 360 degrees. If I tighten it up it becomes even harder to open.

No, my pivot does not rotate at all...
